LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie baseball team split the opening two games of a four game series against UT Permian Basin on Sunday, winning game one 3-2 and falling in the second game 4-2.
In game one, Cameron struck first with a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Luke Hughes to put CU up 1-0 after four innings. UT Permian Basin responded with a pair of runs in the fifth on two RBI hits to take over the lead.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Trey Bigford led off the inning with a walk and then, after UTPB recorded an out, Hughes singles to put two runners on base. The Falcons pitcher then walked three straight batters,
Alberto Moralobo,
Briton Schiewe, and
Kameron Good, to put the Aggies back up on top 3-2.
Skyler Henderson came in to pitch in the seventh and shut the door for his third save of the season; he had one strike out in the inning.
Reid Garrett was strong on the mound for the Black and Gold, going six innings and giving up just the two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. He is now 6-2 on the season.
The second game looked like it would be a pitching duel from the start, as neither team scored in the first five innings of play.
However, UT Permian Basin was able to get on the board with three RBI hits in the top of the sixth. Cameron answered that with a two RBI single from
Michael Flohr in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one.
The Falcons added another run in the top of the eighth, while CU went scoreless in the final three innings as UTPB earned the 4-2 win.
Andrew Garza pitched five innings of not hit baseball before giving up three runs on five hits in the sixth inning; he struck out six and walked four.
Bigford led CU with four hits on the day, two in each game, while Hughes and Flohr each had three in the doubleheader.
Cameron is now 14-19 overall and 4-6 in Lone Star Conference play, while UTPB is now 5-26 on the season and 1-5 in league games. The two teams will meet again on Monday for another doubleheader beginning at noon.
