WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The Cameron University men's and women's tennis teams opened up their fall season at the Midwestern State Invitational this past Friday and Saturday.

On the men's side,
Vinicius Santos was CU's top finisher, coming in second in the Men's Singles Flight A bracket. Santos won three straight matches to start the weekend, before falling in the Flight Championship match 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-6 against Seward County's Hugo Lobo. Additionally,
Julen Gutierrez and
Blake Graham both made it to the quarter finals of their respective brackets.
The duo of
Julien Aubry-Damon and
Pierre Marion also made it to the quarters fo the Men's Doubles Flight A bracket. After losing their first match 9-7 to Southern Arkansas' Yuri Gondouin and Natiphat Mulada, the CU pair won two straight to finish in eighth.
For the women,
Sara Petric and
Melany Opolz both finished third in their respective brackets, while
Rebeka Velasova finished fourth in the same flight as Opolz. Opolz, fell her first match of the flight, but then won five straight, edging out her teammate Velasova for fourth by default. Velasova also lost her first match before winning four straight. Petric took the same route as her Aggie teammates, losing the first match of the invite before winning five matches in a row, including the semi final match against Simone Simas of SAU 6-1, 7-6 to secure fourth place.
In doubles,
Alisa Savina and
Zhenia Shviadok were CU's top duo, making it to the quarter finals and finishing in fourth. The pair won their first two matches of their flight, but lost the next and eventually fell in the fifth round to Washburn's Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Maria Valverde by default.
Cameron's next fall event will be the International Tennis Association's (ITA) annual South Central Regional Tournament. The CU men will compete against the rest of the region in Wichita Falls next weekend, Sep. 21-23, while the Aggie women will compete Sep. 28-30 at the ITAs.
