Shviadok and Frendo highlight CU's weekend at ITA South Central Regional

WICHITA Falls, Texas – The Cameron University tennis teams wrapped up play at the International Tennis Association (ITA) South Central Regional Tournament on Sunday, as a pair of Aggie women, Zhenia Shviadok and Sarah Frendo, punched their ticket to the ITA Cup in a few weeks.

ITA Regional Day 1:
The Aggie men started out the ITA Regional on Friday with five singles competitors and two doubles pairings. Pierre Marion, Oscar del Granado, Vinicius Santos, Julien Aubry-Damon, and Julen Gutierrez all moved on to the round of 32, after winning their first round matches. Marion, Santos, del Granado, and Gutierrez all moved on to the round of 16 in the main draw, while Aubry-Damon lost in his second round battle 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, the CU's pairing of Santos and Gutierrez took down their opponent from Dallas Baptist 8-3 in the first round and then upset the No. 7 seed team from St. Mary's 8-5 to move on to the quarterfinals, while Marion and del Granado were beat in the first round 9-8 by a duo from Colorado State-Pueblo.

Cameron's women all started out their weekend with first round wins, as Shviadok, Sara Petric, Frendo, Melany Opolz, and Rebeka Velasova advanced to the round of 32. From there, just Shviadok and Frendo would go on to play in the next round on Saturday.

Both of the Aggie women's doubles pairings advanced to Saturday's quarter final, as Petric and Velasova beat teams from Western New Mexico and Tarleton State, while Frendo and Shviadok won their matches against opponents from Midwestern State and UT-Tyler.

ITA Regional Day 2:
On day two of the ITA Regional, del Granado was the only CU male tennis athlete to advance to the quarterfinals, but he would eventually fall to SEU's Anish Striniketh 6-2, 6-1. In doubles though, Santos and Gutierrez were able to upset the No. 2 seed Dillon Pineda and Nolan McCaig from MSU 9-7 in the quarterfinals and then beat another Mustang duo in the semifinals to advance to the Main Draw Finals on Sunday.

Frendo and Shviadok both kept up their winning ways, as Frendo beat a TAMK opponent and then the No. 16 seed Valentina Gonzalez from Angelo State 6-3, 6-3 to advance to Sunday, while Shviadok took down her round of 16 matchup in three sets and then beat St. Mary's No. 6 seed Ally Maciel 6-3, 6-4 to move to the semis. They didn't stop there though, as the two went on to win in their doubles quarter and semifinals matches as well to advance to Sunday's final.

ITA Regional Day 3:
In the men's doubles final, CU's Gutierrez and Santos went up against MSU's Ben Westwick and Alberto Diaz. The Aggie men never gave up, but went on to lose the match 6-4, 6-3 to finish second in the draw.

Shviadok and Frendo both faced tough tests in their semifinal match in the singles draw, taking on the No. 2 seed Maddy Coffman from MSU and the No. 5 seed Tabitha Porter from Metro State-Denver respectively. Frendo battled back to win set two 6-2 after falling the first set, but could not outlast Porter losing 6-3 in the final set. Shviadok needed to go to extra points in both of her sets against Coffman, but was able to come away with a 7-6, 7-5 win. Against Porter in the final, the senior was dominant winning 6-3, 6-2 to claim the Regional Championship.

As a doubles team, Shviadok and Frendo faced off against Texas A&M-Kingsville's Lisa Carvajal and Maya Donkor in the draw finals. Cameron looked strong early winning set won 6-3. They faced a tough battle in the second set, but came away with the 7-5 win to claim the top spot in the doubles draw.

The Cameron duo of Shviadok and Frendo will now move on to participate in the ITA Cup, Oct. 11-14 in Rome, Ga.
