Frendo and Santos named LSC Players of the Week

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Lone Star Conference tennis weekly honors were handed out on Thursday and the Cameron tennis program swept the awards as Sarah Frendo was named the Female Player of the Week and Vinicius Santos was named the Male Player of the Week.

Despite her team going 2-2, Frendo found success during singles play, last week. The senior went 2-1 on her own and was 1-3 in doubles play as CU took on ranked opponents in No. 8 West Florida and No. 10 Indianapolis and LSC opponents UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico. Frendo fell 7-5, 6-1 against No. 1 Berta Bonardi from UWF and was leading UIndy's No. 4 ranked Hanna Volikova 7-5, 5-3 before that match was called. She then followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win against UTPB's No. 1 player and a 6-0, 6-3 win against WNMU's No. 1. Frendo also got a 6-2 win with doubles partner Sara Petric during the match against the Falcons.

Frendo is 7-4 in singles play this season, playing as CU's No. 1, while going 6-5 in doubles play. She is now ranked No. 18 in the Oracle/ITA Division II Singles rankings, moving up 14 spots from her previous ranking.

Santos had another strong week as the Aggie men went 4-0, including a pair of wins over top-10 ranked opponents West Florida and Indianapolis. The senior from Brazil went 3-0 in singles and was 4-0 in doubles with partner Julen Gutierrez. Santos and Gutierrez beat both the No. 9 and No. 6 ranked pairing from UWF (6-3) and UIndy (7-5) and then had dominant 6-1 wins at No. 1 against UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico. Santos pulled out a three set win (6-4, 0-6, 7-6) against No. 8 Sedar Bojadjiev from West Florida and was tied 4-4 in the tiebreak against No. 5 Renato Lima, before the match ended. He then took down reigning LSC Player of the Year Raul Stevens 7-6, 5-7, 10-6 in the match against UTPB and beat No. 37 Liam Fraboulet of WNMU 6-1, 6-2.

Santos play has moved him to be ranked No. 20 in singles play and No. 11 in doubles by the ITA. He is 10-4 so far this season playing as CU's No. 1 singles player, and has gone 11-4 in doubles play with Gutierrez. Santos has now won two straight conference honors after claiming the title last week as well.

Frendo and Santos will look to lead the Aggies to another pair of wins on Saturday, March 23, as the CU tennis teams host Northwest Missouri State with a match start time of 11 a.m.
