LAWTON – The Cameron volleyball team makes one of their longest trips of the season this week as they visit Western New Mexico on Thursday and then stop at UT Permian Basin on Saturday.
LEADING THE WAY
Third-year player
Arianna Navarrete has been responsible for almost 24 percent of Cameron's points this fall. She leads CU with 162 kills, almost double the amount of the next player, and 19 service aces. The Tucson, Ariz. native is also first on the team with 151 total digs and her 24 blocks is third most on the team.
THE RETURN
Senior setter
Desiree Marmolejo suffered an injury before Cameron was able to step foot on the court this fall, but on Friday night against the Patriots, the veteran leader made her return to the court in the third set and made an immediate impact on her fellow Aggies. The Edinberg, Texas native assisted on three kills and supplying one of her own during an 8-1 rally early in the frame. She finished the night with four assists and four digs and then added 13 assists and four digs the next night against the Lions.
ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Cameron showed some signs of improvement this past weekend against UT Tyler and A&M-Commerce. The Aggie defense, which on average gives up a .252 attack percentage, limited two of the top offenses in the LSC to hitting clips of .156 and .170 and the second to least amount of kills given up in a match by CU (36). Part of that effort was aided by six total blocks in each match.
IN THE CONFERENCE RANKS
Middle
Jessica Lipkit ranks fifth in the Lone Star Conference with her 49 total blocks this fall, averaging 0.83 per set. Ar. Navarrete is seventh in the conference with her 162 kills, third with 543 total attacks, and sixth in service aces (19). Freshman
Noemie Narbonne is 16th in the league with 269 total assists.
SCOUTING WESTERN NEW MEXICO
The Mustangs are 2-14 on the year and 1-6 in league play. They have played just two matches at home this fall and are currently on a six-match losing skid, not winning since Sep. 24 against Eastern New Mexico. On the attack, WNMU averaged 10.8 kills and is hitting .136, while defensively, they average just 1.5 blocks per set. Senior Bria Augustine leads the team with 160 kills and 12 aces this fall and Maggie Roe has 120 kills. The setter duo of Hailey Hertzog and Madelynn Culp both average over 4.80 assists per set, while Kayla Judd and Megan Custer lead the defense with 36 and 35 blocks respectively.
SCOUTING UT PERMIAN BASIN
Entering the weekend, the Falcons own a 10-5 overall record and a 5-2 league mark with a perfect 3-0 record at home. They average 12.5 kills and 11.1 assists per set with an attacking clip of .187. UTPB also averages 1.8 blocks per set led by Taurie Magee's 47 blocks this fall. Magee (125 kills) is one of three Falcons with over 100 kills this season, led by Aquincia Strambler's 185 points off the attack. That offense is orchestrated by senior Analise Lucio, who averages 8.43 assists per frame with 12 aces on the year.
LOOKING AHEAD
Cameron has their final non-conference battle of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Following their trip to Alva, Okla., the Aggies return home to face Eastern New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 22, and West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 23. Saturday's original match time of 2 p.m. has been pushed back to 4 p.m. with Cameron hosting the LSC Cross Country Championships that morning.
