WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cameron women and men's tennis programs has a strong finish to the fall season as they wrapped up the schedule with the Midwestern State Invitational this past weekend.
The big event of the fall for CU tennis, the ITA South Central Regional, happened almost a month ago, but the Aggies were able to sneak in one more event before shutting it down for the winter offseason.
On the women's side,
Julianne Garcia made it to the finals of flight one, winning a pair of matches before falling to MSU's Hannah Yip 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.
Vasilisa Polunova was also in the first flight, but lost in the opening round to UTPB's Teodora Vrucan, 6-3, 6-3. She then lost in three sets in the finals of the consolation bracket to MSU's Anda Ghinga.
In fight two,
Karolina Glowinska won back-to-back matches to advance to the finals, where she lost 6-7, 6-0, 10-7 to MSU's Kyndall Quiroz.
Pilar Jaurena lost her first-round match in the flight, and then dropped her opening match of the consolation bracket.
Magda Wawroska repeated her teammates in flight three, getting all the way to the final before falling to UCO's Nikki Boyar 6-3, 6-1. In flight four, both
Lia Woods and
Anshu Okamura lost in the opening round, but Okamura was able to go on a win the consolation with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of UCO's Lexi Penn. Additionally,
Nina Pigeassou went 0-2 in flight five.
There were three flights of doubles at the MSU Invite. Cameron's Polunova and Jaurena won a match to make it to the finals of their flight before losing to MSU's Curry and Visic 6-3. In the same draw, Glowinska and Garcia won a pair of matches before being bounced by that same MSU duo.
Pegeassou and Okamura won one match in flight three before losing in the semis to MSU's Minns and Furutani. Additionally, Woods and Wawroska lost in their first-round match in flight two and then were unable to earn a win in the consolation bracket.
Cameron's men had just
Baptiste Mercier competing in flight one. The first-year player won his first match in three sets before losing in the semis to Joaquin Bianchi, 7-6, 6-1.
Carlos Vidal had more success in flight two, winning two matches to make it to the final before falling to Egor Shestakov 7-5, 7-5.
In flight three,
Tomas Almeida won his opener 6-1, 6-2 before a loss to OBU's Tobias Fuerschuss in the next round.
Joao Duleba was the last man standing in flight four, winning two matches before an injury in the final by his opponent.
Sean Batkis lost in the flight's opening round but won his only match of the consolation bracket 6-4, 7-5 over Leon Sell.
Marek Slojewski went 1-1 in flight five and
Kristian Kubik lost his opening round match before winning two in the consolation to be the last one standing in that bracket.
Mercier and Almeida competed in flight one doubles, losing their first match before winning the consolation bracket with a 6-2 win over UTPB's Schwieger and Kohler. Kubik and Vidal had the best weekend of any CU duo, winning three straight matches in flight two to claim the win. Batkis and Duleba did the same in flight three, winning 6-3 over Shestakov and Chuev in the final.
Cameron will start competing as a team in the spring as they push for another run at Lone Star Conference and South Central Region Championships.
