Aggies Drop One & Win One Against The Javelinas

Lawton, OK – The Cameron Aggies softball team took the field at 4 PM on April 11, 2025, at home, for a doubleheader against the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas. The Aggies fell short in extra innings in Game 1 but managed to survive a potential comeback from the Javelinas in Game 2. The wind didn't play much of a factor as Cameron's efforts to rally against a persistent Texas A&M-Kingsville squad were put on display in each game.

Game 1: Aggies Fall In Extra Innings
Tinley Schmidgall pitched Game 1 for the Aggies, who recorded six hits and one error. Cameron's offense started slowly, with Kelsey Creech, Kaiden Boren, and Madysen Boutwell going down in order in the first via a fly out and two strikeouts. In the second, Haley Gardella doubled up the middle, but Kyndel McDaniel, Rylee Ross, and Chloe Middleton struck out, leaving Gardella stranded as Texas A&M-Kingsville took a 2-0 lead.

Cameron fought back in the third when Anslie Roach walked, Payton Dickerson singled to the pitcher, and Creech walked to load the bases. Boren's sacrifice fly to right field scored Roach, and Boutwell's single to second base drove in Dickerson to tie the game at 2-2. Gardella struck out looking, and McDaniel flied out to center field, leaving two runners on base. The Aggies' bats then cooled, with Ross lining out, Middleton striking out, and Roach flying out in the fourth. In the fifth, Dickerson grounded out, Creech flied out, and Boutwell popped up, though Boren singled up the middle.

The sixth saw Gardella, McDaniel, and Ross all retired on line outs and a fly out, while the seventh had Middleton striking out, Roach and Dickerson fouling out. In the eighth, Creech flied out and Boren grounded out, but Boutwell singled through the left side, and Shiya Victorian pinch-ran before Gardella struck out swinging. In the ninth, with Texas A&M-Kingsville ahead 3-2, McDaniel fouled out and Ross flied out. Middleton singled to the catcher, and Mia Garcia pinch-hit for Roach but fouled out to the catcher, ending the game.

Cameron's six hits included Gardella's double, singles from Dickerson, Boren, Boutwell, Ross, and Middleton, with Roach and Dickerson scoring in the third. Texas A&M-Kingsville claimed the win in the ninth.

Game 2: Aggies Avoid a Javelina Comeback To Win
Stormee Reed pitched in Game 2 for Cameron, who defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-4 in seven innings. The Aggies tallied nine hits and committed no errors throughout the game. Cameron built an early lead and held off a late Texas A&M-Kingsville push to secure the victory. Reed struck out 12 batters over seven innings, throwing 83 pitches.

Cameron's offense opened quietly in the first, with Creech popping up to first base, Boutwell popping up to left field, and Gardella popping up to right field, though Boren walked. In the second, Ross singled up the middle, and Garcia singled to left center, advancing Ross to third on a right field error, but Middleton grounded out, Roach popped up, and McDaniel lined out, leaving two runners on base. The third saw Boren single to left center and McDaniel single to third base, with Gardella walking to load the bases after Boutwell's sacrifice groundout advanced Boren; Victorian pinch-ran for Gardella, but Ross grounded out, stranding three. In the fourth, Garcia singled up the middle and advanced to third on a passed ball, scoring on Roach's single to the pitcher to tie the game at 1-1. Creech reached on a catcher's error and stole second, Boutwell walked, and Gardella singled up the middle, driving in Roach and Creech to give Cameron a 3-1 lead, though McDaniel's hit-by-pitch and Ross's fielder's choice left three on base.

Cameron extended their advantage in the fifth when Garcia reached on a third base error, moved to second on Middleton's sacrifice groundout, and scored on Creech's single through the left side, making it 4-1. Boren doubled to right center, driving in Creech to push the lead to 5-1, though Roach and Boutwell grounded out, leaving Boren stranded. The sixth inning saw Gardella fly out to left field, McDaniel foul out to first base, and Ross pop up to left field against Texas A&M-Kingsville's relief pitcher, keeping the score at 5-1. Texas A&M-Kingsville closed the gap to 5-4 with a home run in the seventh, but Cameron held firm to clinch the win.

The Aggies' nine hits included two each from Boren and Garcia, and one each from Ross, McDaniel, Roach, Creech, and Gardella, with Garcia scoring twice, and Roach and Creech once each, while Reed allowed six hits and four runs over her complete game effort.

Looking Ahead
The Aggies will hit the field again at 1 PM and 3 PM on Sunday, April 13th as they take on Texas A&M-International at home in Lawton.
