Lawton, OK – The Cameron Aggies softball team took the field at 4 PM on April 11, 2025, at home, for a doubleheader against the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas. The Aggies fell short in extra innings in Game 1 but managed to survive a potential comeback from the Javelinas in Game 2. The wind didn't play much of a factor as Cameron's efforts to rally against a persistent Texas A&M-Kingsville squad were put on display in each game.
Game 1: Aggies Fall In Extra Innings
Tinley Schmidgall pitched Game 1 for the Aggies, who recorded six hits and one error. Cameron's offense started slowly, with
Kelsey Creech,
Kaiden Boren, and
Madysen Boutwell going down in order in the first via a fly out and two strikeouts. In the second,
Haley Gardella doubled up the middle, but
Kyndel McDaniel,
Rylee Ross, and
Chloe Middleton struck out, leaving
Gardella stranded as Texas A&M-Kingsville took a 2-0 lead.
Cameron fought back in the third when
Anslie Roach walked,
Payton Dickerson singled to the pitcher, and
Creech walked to load the bases.
Boren's sacrifice fly to right field scored
Roach, and
Boutwell's single to second base drove in
Dickerson to tie the game at 2-2.
Gardella struck out looking, and
McDaniel flied out to center field, leaving two runners on base. The Aggies' bats then cooled, with
Ross lining out,
Middleton striking out, and
Roach flying out in the fourth. In the fifth,
Dickerson grounded out,
Creech flied out, and
Boutwell popped up, though
Boren singled up the middle.
The sixth saw
Gardella,
McDaniel, and
Ross all retired on line outs and a fly out, while the seventh had
Middleton striking out,
Roach and
Dickerson fouling out. In the eighth,
Creech flied out and
Boren grounded out, but
Boutwell singled through the left side, and
Shiya Victorian pinch-ran before
Gardella struck out swinging. In the ninth, with Texas A&M-Kingsville ahead 3-2,
McDaniel fouled out and
Ross flied out.
Middleton singled to the catcher, and
Mia Garcia pinch-hit for
Roach but fouled out to the catcher, ending the game.
Cameron's six hits included
Gardella's double, singles from
Dickerson,
Boren,
Boutwell,
Ross, and
Middleton, with
Roach and
Dickerson scoring in the third. Texas A&M-Kingsville claimed the win in the ninth.
Game 2: Aggies Avoid a Javelina Comeback To Win
Stormee Reed pitched in Game 2 for Cameron, who defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-4 in seven innings. The Aggies tallied nine hits and committed no errors throughout the game. Cameron built an early lead and held off a late Texas A&M-Kingsville push to secure the victory.
Reed struck out 12 batters over seven innings, throwing 83 pitches.
Cameron's offense opened quietly in the first, with
Creech popping up to first base,
Boutwell popping up to left field, and
Gardella popping up to right field, though
Boren walked. In the second,
Ross singled up the middle, and
Garcia singled to left center, advancing
Ross to third on a right field error, but
Middleton grounded out,
Roach popped up, and
McDaniel lined out, leaving two runners on base. The third saw
Boren single to left center and
McDaniel single to third base, with
Gardella walking to load the bases after
Boutwell's sacrifice groundout advanced
Boren;
Victorian pinch-ran for
Gardella, but
Ross grounded out, stranding three. In the fourth,
Garcia singled up the middle and advanced to third on a passed ball, scoring on
Roach's single to the pitcher to tie the game at 1-1.
Creech reached on a catcher's error and stole second,
Boutwell walked, and
Gardella singled up the middle, driving in
Roach and
Creech to give Cameron a 3-1 lead, though
McDaniel's hit-by-pitch and
Ross's fielder's choice left three on base.
Cameron extended their advantage in the fifth when
Garcia reached on a third base error, moved to second on
Middleton's sacrifice groundout, and scored on
Creech's single through the left side, making it 4-1.
Boren doubled to right center, driving in
Creech to push the lead to 5-1, though
Roach and
Boutwell grounded out, leaving
Boren stranded. The sixth inning saw
Gardella fly out to left field,
McDaniel foul out to first base, and
Ross pop up to left field against Texas A&M-Kingsville's relief pitcher, keeping the score at 5-1. Texas A&M-Kingsville closed the gap to 5-4 with a home run in the seventh, but Cameron held firm to clinch the win.
The Aggies' nine hits included two each from
Boren and
Garcia, and one each from
Ross,
McDaniel,
Roach,
Creech, and
Gardella, with
Garcia scoring twice, and
Roach and
Creech once each, while
Reed allowed six hits and four runs over her complete game effort.
