Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Western New Mexico

Silver City, NM -  The Cameron University softball team split the doubleheader against Western New Mexico University on Friday evening. 

In game one, Western New Mexico got out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Madysen Boutwell hit a 2 RBI double in the top of the third inning to make it a 3-2 game. In the bottom of the third inning, WNMU scored two more runs to go up by three runs again. Haley Gardella hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to two runs. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead. Western New Mexico closed out the game defensively for the win.

In game two, Cameron got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Brynn Webber hit an RBI single, one of her five hits on the day, in the top of the second inning. In the third inning, the Aggies scored five runs to lead 7-0. Western New Mexico answered with four runs in the bottom of the third to cut into the deficit. Cameron tacked on a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to extend their lead to 10-4. The Aggie bats stayed hot in the top of the seventh, with Kyley Cochran hitting a 3 RBI double, Brynn Webber hitting a 2 RBI triple, and Madysen Boutwell hitting a 2-run home run to make it a 17-4 game. Stormee Reed closed out the game for Cameron, getting two of her 10 strikeouts of the day in the last frame.
