Aggies and Pioneers Go the Distance

DENTON, Texas – 38 ties and 18 lead changes pushed Thursday nights Lone Star Conference volleyball match between Cameron and Texas Woman’s to five sets (15-25, 21-25, 25-21, 26-24, 11-15). However, the Aggies couldn’t hold on to an early fifth set lead despite getting a team-high three kills from freshman Megan Olivarez.

For the match, Olivarez had a career and contest-high 24 kills, while junior Adrienne Lawson added 14. Freshman Jenna Risoli had a match-high 46 assists to go along with 14 digs for her second consecutive double-double.

Cameron (7-15, 2-7) dropped sets one and two, but scratched and clawed its way back into the match to force a decisive fifth contest. During the third set, the Aggies hit .273 had five kills from Olivarez and in the fourth stanza Cameron had a .378 attacking percent and 21 kills with just four errors.

In the third set Cameron had a six point advantage late (19-13), but TWU (8-14, 5-4) was able to bring it back within one (21-20). However, the Aggies went on a 4-1 run thanks in part to back-to-back kills from Olivarez and Risoli.

After falling down early in the fourth set, Cameron tied the contest at 15 and was led by Olivarez, who had six kills late in the match, which includes the final two of the set.

Lawson gave the Aggies a one point lead (6-5) early in the fifth set, but TWU ended the high octane match by going on a 10-5 run. Cameron hit just .130 in the final set, but did have seven kills.

Cameron will play its final road match of the season Sunday at 3 p.m. at Texas A&M-Commerce.
