LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron's women's basketball team started the 2010-11 season with a win, posting a 76-64 victory over Texas A&M-International Friday night at Aggie Gym.  Coach Tom Webb’s Lady Aggies exploded for 47 points in the second half to earn the victory.

Four players scored in double figures and another just missed as Webb’s club settled down in the second half.

Senior Josie Stewart led the attack with 22 points, netting 12 in the second half. She also led CU in rebounding with nine.

Nicole Pendarvis had 16 points and six assists. Alexis Williams scored nine of her 12 points in the second half. Sabelle Diata chipped in with 11 points and blocked two shots.

A&M International was paced by Erika Rosas with 15 points, including three treys. Johnna Williams added 14 points while Linda Banuelos had 10.

International used its pressure defense and tough rebounding to earn a 33-29 halftime lead. Rosas broke a 28-28 tie with a three-pointer just before the 30-second clock expired and Linda Banuelos broke free for a layup to offset a free throw by Ali Brown.

Seven unanswered points – four by Lacey Reinke – shot Cameron into a 12-7 lead after four minutes. A&M turned that around with an 18-6 run for a 25-18 lead, but a pair of three-pointers by Stewart punctuated an 8-0 Cameron spree that made it 26-25 on favor of the Aggies.

The clubs battled through five ties and two lead changes in the second half before a layup by Jessica Priest off a Williams assist put the Aggies ahead, 51-49. They steadily extended the advantage, finally reaching double figures on a follow shot by Diata with 2:40 to play.

“We talked at halftime,” Webb said. “We could have gone in and yelled at them, but there was no reason.

“I don’t know if it’s lack of coaching or whatever, but we just didn’t look ready to play. I don’t know if it was because of Oklahoma (an exhibition loss Wednesday) or because it’s the first home game.

“The second half we played really well and really hard. We functioned as a team. I’m very pleased with our young ladies.

“I think the biggest thing that’s exciting is we scored 47 points the second half. If you can score 47 points, hopefully you won’t lose very many.”

Webb knows the Aggies will face a tough challenge today as they face Kansas Newman at 4 p.m.

“It will be a war,” he said. “Newman’s loaded now. They have a new coach (Jaime Green), so it will be an interesting game.

“We didn’t pick any pansies starting out.”
