LAWTON, Okla. – Newman University turned the tables on Cameron with a 13-1 run midway through the second half Saturday and rode that momentum to a 75-70 women’s basketball victory in the Aggie Gym.

The Wichita, Kan., club faced a 46-42 deficit when Cameron’s Josie Stewart hit a three-pointer with 13:53 to play.

Cameron scored just one point in the next six minutes, committing six turnovers in 10 trips down the court. Newman converted on six of 11 possessions to wrest 55-47 control and the Aggies couldn’t catch up.

Newman improves to 2-0 on the year. Cameron, which visits Alamosa, Colo., next weekend for a pair of games, is 1-1 after opening the season Friday with a 76-64 win over Texas A&M-International.

Cameron received 19-point leadership from junior Nicole Pendarvis, who added five assists. Alexis Williams and Sabelle Diata added 13 points apiece and Stewart finally shook off defensive pressure from Samantha Soyez to finish with 12.

The Ags had no answer for Newman forward Philicia Kelly, a transfer from Labette Junior College. The native of Nassau scored 30 points, many on fast breaks after the Jets forced turnovers.

Kansas transfer Rhea Codio added 14 points and center Tasha Cannon 11.

CU edged the Jets, 34-32, on the boards as Stewart led the way with five. Diata added four. Cannon and Kelly had nine each for Newman.

CU coach Tom Webb tipped his cap to Newman coach Jaime Green, who has put together a roster of two Division I transfers, nine junior college players and three high school recruits.

“She’s done a great job recruiting,” Webb said. “They got every loose ball. We talked to our young ladies about that. They got every loose ball and we shot it 24 percent from ‘three’. Those two things kill you.

“Fatigue got us a little bit during their run. We had a bad lineup in there, maybe a lineup that couldn’t function offensively very well. We had to get a couple kids off the floor. We called a time out to run something. The kid was open and we didn’t make the play. It’s just one of those things. Hopefully we’ll learn from it.

“We all know we’re going for the Lone Star Conference. We showed great growth at times, other times you want more.

“Nicole played really well all weekend. She’s starting to understand. We’re always going to want more from Josie and Alexis and Sabelle, just because we think we can get that.”

The first half was a nip-and-tuck battle that featured six ties and three lead exchanges. The Jets led by nine, 29-20, with 5:30 to go but the Ags closed with a 16-5 run to claim a 36-34 edge. Pendarvis keyed the spree with seven points, including three free throws when she was fouled attempting a trey.

Cameron will meet Western State on Friday and host Adams State on Saturday.

“We have to go now and have high expectations,” Webb said. “We’re going to go and get after it.”
