ALAMOSA, Colo. – It was the tale of two halves. In the first half, Cameron's women's basketball team found itself in a very physical game with Adams State (3-1) and not until coming out for the second half did the Aggies respond. Adams State took a 58-27 lead to the locker room. After deciding not to take it anymore, the Aggies responded by playing the host team even in the second half. It still resulted in the second straight loss for the Aggies, as they fell 88-57.
Cameron (1-3) did not respond to the physical play, which was evident of the scoring. The Aggies led in the opening minutes, but it didn’t take long for Adams State to start pulling away. Led by guard Vera Jo Bustos’ 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, Adams State took control and never looked back. Two other players were in double figures.
Cameron was led in scoring by Josie Stewart and Alexis Stewart who each had 12 points. Stewart was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Aggies were beaten badly on the boards as they were outrebounded 45-24. CU head coach
Tom Webb made this observation: “We got killed on the boards, which is a direct indication of their aggressiveness. Right from the start Adams was very aggressive and physical and it wasn’t until the second half that we decided not to take it anymore. I was proud of our play in the second half.”
“Our turnovers were down from last night and of our 23 tonight, seven were offensive fouls. We took better care of the basketball tonight. What we learned though is that the better teams are physical,” coach Webb stated. He went on to say, “This will be just the type of play that Northeastern and West Texas will play. We have to respond and mix it up with them if we want to win the LSC North or even make it to Bartlesville. If we learn from this, then it is good, but if we don’t, well then we are in trouble.”
Adams State returned all their players from a Sweet 16 team a year ago. Coach Webb was impressed with them, but added “We have the clay, now we have to mold it. That’s our job as coaches. We will come home and get on that task.”
Cameron returns to action on November 27 when Tarleton State comes to the Aggie Gym for a 2:00 pm tip-off.
