KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron University Aggies women’s basketball team (6-5) ended 2010 the right way – on a five-game winning streak as they capped off their two-game Texas sized road trip with a 71-61 victory over Lone Star Conference cross-over foe Texas A&M Kingsville (2-8) Monday night on the Hampton Inn Court 71-61.
The Aggies went into the half trailing the Javelinas 36-27 but rallied to outscored the home squad by 19 in the second stanza to bring back a ten point victory and keep their winning ways alive.
“[Coming back in the second half] was all about taking what they were giving us, playing our inside game and attacking the rim,” said Head Coach
Tom Webb. “We made a switch to man-to-man defense and our team really shut them down.”
The Aggies were also smart and technical all night as they allowed the Javelinas to reach the free throw line just five times the entire game.
“Keeping them off the line was another big part of our success tonight,” noted Webb. “Anytime you can keep a team from taking free shots over and over, it gives you a great chance to win.”
In a game that featured 11 total lead changes or ties, every basket was instrumental. The Aggies were able to pull away for good on a layup from senior leader Josie Stewart. Stewart, who had the only double-double of the night, posted 18 points on a 7-of-12 (58-percent) shooting night and 11 rebounds.
Junior Sabelle Diata was a dominate force yet again. The Dakar, Senegal native scored 21 points on a 9-for-14 (64-percent) night. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
The Aggies also had their most successful night shooting as they were 28-for-59 (48-percent) and tallied their third highest point total of the season.
Kelly Barstow led the Javelinas with 15 points while Breanne Gonzales added 13.
Webb and his squad will now take time off the enjoy their Winter break before returning to the court on Jan. 2 when they return to Texas to square off against Texas-Permian Basin. Tip off for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
