PORTALES, N.M. – The Cameron Aggies women’s basketball team (2-5) completed their two-game road trip with a thrilling win over the Zias of Eastern New Mexico (1-5), Saturday, at the Greyhound Arena, 81-74.
Senior Josie Stewart led the Aggies with 25 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the field, while junior Sabelle Diata pulled down a staggering 20 rebounds. Diata added 15 points for her first double-double of the season and second consecutive double-double by an Aggie women’s basketball player.
Eastern New Mexico went into halftime with a 10 point lead and built it to as many as 18 in the second half, but Head Coach
Tom Webb rallied his team as Cameron came out strong in the second to eliminate the deficit.
With less than four minutes remaining and Eastern New Mexico up by ten, sophomore Alexis Williams slashed into the lane to drop a layup and cut the lead to single digits for the first time since the first half.
Williams’ late-game points sparked a 15-0 run by the visitors as Cameron held the home squad scoreless for the remainder of the game.
“When we were down by 15 with four minutes to go and the media timeout came, we went to a press defense and really kept the pressure on,” said Webb. He added that, “Stewart and Sabelle really had the hot hand and Alexis Williams made some crucial buckets for us.”
A foul by ENMU’s Kiara Tate sent junior Nicole Pendaris to the foul line with Cameron trailing by two with only 11 seconds on the clock. Pendaris kept her cool and drained both shots to send the game into overtime.
Cameron kept up its relentless defense and ceded only a pair of points in the extra period.
“We were trying to be aggressive and really attack the rim,” said Webb. “But also, our bench kept us fresh and players like Ali Brown, Jessica Priest, and really the entire team stayed focused and gave us a great opportunity to win.”
Diata and Stewart scored seven of the Aggies’ nine points to lead the team to its first road victory of the season and first in Lonestar Conference crossover play.
The Aggies now slide into a two-game homestand where they will host Bacone and LSC rival Midwestern State on Dec. 8 and Dec. 13, respectively. Tip-off for Bacone is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Aggie Gym.
