LAWTON, Okla. – If the final 18 seconds of a game ever told the story of the game as a whole, the Cameron Aggies women’s basketball team (8-7, 1-0) told quite a tale as they knocked off No. 6 Northeastern State (11-2, 0-1) Wednesday night in Aggie Gym.
After sophomore guard Alexis Williams drained two free throws late in the game to put the team up 58-55, the Aggie women were able to hold the RiverHawks from attempting the game-tying three point shot for 18 seconds with constant pressure and tight defense.
When the buzzer finally sounded, an elated Cameron squad rushed out to the court to celebrate the historic victory.
“In my younger days as a coach, I would’ve gone into that locker room after the game and told the girls to forget about this one and get ready for the next game,” said Head Coach
Tom Webb. “But for this one, I’m going to let them enjoy it while I watch tape on the game tonight.”
Junior Sabelle Diata certainly brought her best against one of the top teams in the Lone Star Conference. The Senegal native exploded for 19 points and 14 rebounds in 37 minutes on an 8-for-19 shooting night.
The RiverHawks, as a team, managed only 23 rebounds as the Aggies were tough on the glass all night long.
Northeastern’s senior forward Jasmine Webb averaged 13.5 points coming into the game and was held to just six on the night while sophomore guard Tosha Tyler averaged 10 and managed only five as Webb’s defense remained stout.
After shaking numerous hands and receiving a wealth of pats on the back Webb said, “Our defense was really key tonight. These young women have been getting better and better all season and have bonded as a unit.”
Williams led all scorers with 21 points and was 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Freshmen Lacy Reinke and Ali Brown also came up big for the Aggies with outstanding defensive efforts. Reinke, a Lawton native, used every bit of her six-foot-two frame to body out opponents in the paint to free up Diata in what can only be described as a total team effort.
The Aggies now turn their attention to LSC North opponent Central Oklahoma. The women are scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip off on Saturday, Jan. 15 in Edmond.
