Charity Stripe Dooms Cameron as Aggie Women Fall to Tigers, 68-66

ADA, Okla. – Behind strong free throw shooting, the Cameron Aggies women’s basketball team (8-9, 1-2) fell to the Lady Tigers of East Central (9-7, 2-1) in Lone Star Conference North Division play 68-66.

The Lady Tigers were able to advance to the line 23 times, connecting on 19 while the Aggies managed only 10 trips resulting in just five points. Turnovers also played a big role in the game as the Tigers committed just 12 turnovers to the Aggies 23.

“It’s always hard to come on the road and take away games in conference play,” said Head Coach Tom Webb. “But it’s especially tough when you commit 23 turnovers and only shoot 50-percent from the line. We didn’t help ourselves one bit and you can see the final result.”

Senior Josie Stewart led all scorers with 27 points and 13 rebounds on a 10-for-17 night while sophomore Alexis Williams added 21 more.

The Aggies started off the first Tiger possession with a quick Josie Stewart steal and an Alexis Williams trey from long range. Following consecutive three point attempts by both teams, Williams again found the bottom of the bucket to run the lead to 6-3.

Williams continued her run to put up the first eight points for the Aggies to keep CU in contention as the Lady Tigers opened up 4-for-5 from behind the arc.

A reverse layup by Stewart with less than two minutes remaining drew the Aggie lead to three at 37-34 and made up two of her 17 first half points. In the first half alone, Stewart was 6-of-8 from the floor including 4-of-5 from three point territory.

After a back-and-forth first half that featured eight ties and six lead changes, the Aggies went into the half up by only a pair at 40-38.

The Tigers opened the half on a 9-0 run before Stewart broke the streak with a three point basket followed by a Williams layup to bring the game back to 47-45.

Down 64-61, the Aggies converted the three point play to run it to 64 all as Williams was fouled underneath the basket with 1:35 to go. Sparked by four free throws, the Lady Tigers were able to pull away to the 68-66 victory.

The Aggies had one final attempt but were trapped out by the Tigers resulting in a Casi Rawl steal to end the game.

Rawls led the Lady Tigers with 17 points while Ashley Robison completed the double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Aggies return home to Aggie Gym on Saturday when they play host to the Pioneers of Texas Woman’s University. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
