LAWTON, Okla. —The Cameron University women’s basketball team took care of business tonight, picking up a win in its final game before Christmas. The women clenched an easy 77-48 win over the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas, improving their conference record to 5-1 and their overall record to 7-2.

Women’s basketball coach Tom Webb indicated he was very happy with his team’s performance in the conference contest.

“I’m really pleased with how we played. We struggled a bit in the first half, but came back in the second and hit some big shots,” Webb said. “Tonight’s win was, once again, a team effort.”

The Black and Gold had a nine point lead going into the half, but outscored the Javelinas by 20 in the second.

CU’s Alexis Williams was a big contributor the team’s success. She racked up some 21 points and came away with seven rebounds and four steals. Senior Nicole Pendarvis was the second leading scorer for the Aggies. She put away 17 points and was 7-10 in total field goals.

Defensively, Ali Brown could not be stopped. The sophomore pulled down 11 rebounds, the most of any player on either team.

Webb said that the squad’s success so far is just a taste of what the women could accomplish by the end of the season.

“I think now we understand how good we can be. We believe in ourselves, and we believe in each other,” Webb said. “We are excited about what’s still to come.”

The next action for CU comes Dec. 31 when the women will compete against East Central in Ada, Okla. However, the Aggies will not see another conference match-up until they play Texas Woman’s on Jan. 4 in Denton.

Webb said the long break before the next games is well-deserved for his team.

“The break is what we need right now. We’re all going to go home and enjoy Christmas. It will be good to regroup and refresh,” Webb said. “When we come back, we’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing.”
