Box Score LAWTON—The Cameron University women’s basketball team took care of business Saturday afternoon against the Texas A&M Commerce Lions. The Aggie women came away with a comfortable 68-51 victory.
CU women’s basketball coach Tom Webb was more than happy with the team’s win, and said he was pleased with the way his team performed.
“It’s always nice to get a conference win, to get it taken care of and move forward,” Webb said. “Our young kids played really well for us. Our bench and defense were good for us today too. I’m really pleased with the whole team. We were very balanced today.”
The Aggies were led by senior standout Julie Paunovic who pulled off a double-double by earning 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Sabelle Diata also did well for the Black and Gold. The Senegal native racked up 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Webb was particularly pleased with the effort Nicole Pendarvis put forth on the court. Pendarvis had some 12 points for the Aggies and was invaluable throughout the game.
“Nicole played very well. She pushed the ball when we needed her to and did what we needed her to do. She played as well as she ever has,” Webb said.
The women’s coach said he thought the crowd played a role in the team’s conference success today.
“The crowd was great. They really got into the game and helped create a great environment for us,” Webb said.
Though Webb was happy with what he saw from his team, he said they will have to be better with each game, including Wednesday’s home match-up against Angelo State.
“We did a better job of taking care of the basketball today, but we’ve got to get better, and we have to be more aggressive,” he said. “We have to get after it and hold serve at home if we want to compete for the conference title.”
The CU women’s Wednesday action is set to begin at 6 p.m. in the Aggie Gym. They will be followed by the men who tip off at 8 p.m.
