Aggie Softball Edged in Pair of Opening Games at Abilene Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – The Cameron Aggies softball team (1-5) dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Abilene Christian Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Wells Field.

The Aggies lost their opening game to St. Mary’s 6-2 and were edged out in the final inning by Lone Star Conference rival Texas Woman’s University 6-5.

In the opening game, St. Mary’s jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the second on the back of a pair of singles and two errors by the Aggies.

Cameron added one in the bottom half of the inning on a Shelby Meadows’ double to left center field to drive in Amanda Karth.

The Aggies added another in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2 when Drew Wright roped a double to left center to bring Kelly Lentz in from around the diamond.

St. Mary’s padded their lead with two more in the seventh and the Aggies were unable to come up with anything more.

Carrie Harvey was tagged with the loss on a complete seven inning game. Harvey allowed eight hits and was tagged with three earned runs. She walked four and struck out six.

Cameron had seven hits to St. Mary’s eight but committed four errors.

In the second game, the Aggies offered up a much better fight but came up short with late heroics from Pioneers.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, TWU’s Kayla Williams got the ball out of the infield to drive in the winning run.

Leslie Martini put the Aggies on the board first in the top of the second but the Pioneers quickly responded on the other end of the inning with a two-run shot to left field from Jordan Readicker.

Drew Wright knotted the game up in the third with a ground out to second to drive in Anna Hudson.

Cameron built its lead to 4-2 in the fourth as Meca Chambers singled to drive Cheryl Raesz who was on to run for Shelby Meadows.

The Pioneers grabbed a 5-4 lead in their side of the fourth with a three-run inning headlined by a three-run homer to left field from April Mandel.

Trailing 5-3 in the seventh, the Aggies showed their fight and added two including a Wright single shot to center field.  

However, in the final half inning, Williams was able to push in the deciding run to give TWU the victory.

Harvey pitched 6.1 innings of softball, surrendering nine hits, tallying eight strikeouts and allowed five earned runs.

The Aggies will play another pair of games tomorrow at the tournament and will square off against West Texas A&M and host Abilene Christian. First pitch for the West Texas game is set for 12 p.m.
