Aggies Squeeze Past Bulldogs on the Road, 57-55

Sabelle Diata pulled down 16 rebounds and added 11 points.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Senior Josie Stewart extended her double figures scoring streak to six games, posting 14 on the night with five rebounds, as the Cameron Aggies women's basketball team (10-11, 3-4 LSC North) won a tight one on the road against the Southwestern Oklahoma Bulldogs (10-9, 2-5 LSC North) in a critical Lone Star Conference North Division battle, 57-55, Thursday night in Weatherford.

Junior guard Sabelle Diata returned to the starting lineup tonight as well after posting 16 minutes a week ago on the heels of a four game absence. The Dakar, Sengal native grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds along with 11 points while blocking five shots. It was her third double-double this season.

Sophomore guard Alexis Williams added 13 points to complete the double figure scoring trifecta for the Aggies.

The game was tight throughout with the visitors holding the largest lead of the first half, seven points, coming with under four minutes to go.

Southwestern threatened to come back and took a two point lead on a Sumiya Darden layup with 11:02 to go in the second before Diata sank a bucket to tie the game for the fifth time.

The Aggies then went on an 8-0 run capped by a Stewart trey to give Head Coach Tom Webb’s squad its largest lead of the night.

The Bulldogs closed the game on a 13-7 run but were never able to overcome strong free throw shooting by the Aggies in the waning seconds..

The Aggies connected on 20 of 48 (41.8 percent) from the field and were 2 of 8 (25 percent) from the behind the arc.  In the turnover department, the Bulldogs committed just eight giveaways to the Aggies 19 but were able to only lead by two midway through the second half.

Sumiya Darden led the Bulldogs with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Southwestern shot just 23 percent (15 of 65) on the night from the field including 15.8 percent (3 of 19) from behind the arc.

The Aggies return home this Saturday to host the Bulldogs again in their final regular season matchup of the season. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Aggie Gym and the game is presented by the Comanche County Tag Agency.
