Aggies Drop Two in Season Opener in San Antonio

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Antonio – The Cameron Aggies (0-2) softball season got off to a rough start today as they dropped a pair of opening games at the St. Mary’s Tournament in San Antonio on Saturday.

The Aggies began the day with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch against No. 8 Angelo State and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. They were unable to maintain, however, as the Texanns rallied back in the sixth to add four and hold on for the 4-3 win.

Jessica Orr got the Aggie bats started with a single in the first before moving down to second on a Drew Wright single.

With two on, four hole hitter Leslie Martini took a Jessica Newsome pitch out of the park to put the Aggies on the board 3-0.

Junior pitcher Carrie Harvey kept the Texanns off the board for five innings, surrendering only two hits in that span and striking out nine.

In the sixth, however, Harvey allowed a single and walked two to load the bases for Kacie Easley who took the Aggie starter’s offering out of the park for a four RBI grand slam.

Harvey was tagged with the loss but pitched a complete seven inning game, while allowing four hits, four earned runs and striking out 13. Clarissa Molina picked up the win for Angelo on three innings pitched.

The second game of the day was not so close as the Aggies fell 12-3 to homestanding St. Mary’s in a shortened game.

St. Mary’s jumped out to a seven run lead in the bottom half of the first facing freshman Anna Hudson in her first career start. Hudson allowed five hits and seven runs before Watson opted to put Harvey back on the mound.

The veteran pitcher weathered the storm and escaped the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a pop out.

Hudson, who moved to the designated hitter spot, knocked in Martini on a single for the Aggies first run of the day in the top half of the second.

Down 7-1 in the top of the third, Kelly Lentz singled to get on before Wright homered to cut the lead to 4, 7-3.

The Aggies were unable to find anymore run production the rest of the way while St. Mary’s tacked on another five to end the day early after the fifth inning.

Hudson was tabbed with the loss. Harvey, in relief, faced 22 batters, striking out five and allowing four earned runs. Freshman Emily Britain picked up the victory for St. Mary’s.

The Aggies return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon with a pair of games against Texas A&M Kingsville and the University of Texas at Permian Basin.
