SAN ANTONIO - Carrie Harvey pitched a complete game for the Aggies (1-3) as the Cameron University softball team split a pair of Sunday games in San Antonio at the St. Mary's Tournament.
The Aggies took down the University of Texas at Permian Basin (UTPB) in the morning game, 4-3, but fell the Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Kingsville 9-7 in the afternoon game.
Against UTPB, the Aggies picked up a pair of runs on a
Leslie Martini's second home run shot of the young season in the top of the first.
Cameron put another point on the board with another Martini RBI as she knocked in
Drew Wright. Martini repeated again in the fifth, doubling to bring home Wright and grow the lead to 4-0.
UTPB battled back in the sixth and seventh innings, adding three runs on a pair of doubles in the sixth and smart batting in the seventh. It was not enough to close the lead however and the Aggies picked up their first win of the season.
Harvey pitched seven complete innings, striking out seven while allowing just seven hits. The Aggies also combined for ten hits with no errors.
In the afternoon affair, Kingsville exploded for 16 hits while the Aggies committed two errors and had ten hits.
It was an offensive battle as the first 4.5 innings featured a combined 12 points including three for Kingsville in the top half of the first.
Down 4-0 in the second, Cameron cut the lead to 4-2 on a
Kelsy Hebert single to drive in Martini and an
Amy Erwin sacrifice fly to bring in
Amanda Karth.
Both teams added a pair of runs in the third to make it a 6-4 ball game. Martini again sent one out of the park with Wright on first for her third homerun of the weekend. For the weekend, she hit at a .615 clip with a 1.692 slugging percentage. She also had eight hits, including five doubles and three homeruns, and ten RBIs.
Kingsville added another two runs in the fourth before the Aggies responded with three in the bottom half of the fifth.
Meca Chambers scored from third on a wild pitch to make it an 8-5 game.
Kelly Lentz drew a walk and was knocked around to third on a Wright double. Martini stepped into the box to drive in her final runs of the weekend on a two RBI double to draw the game to one run at 8-7.
The Aggies allowed another run in seventh to fall to 9-7 and were unable to make up any ground in the final half inning.
Head Coach Beth Watson's squad finished the tournament with a 1-3 record and head back to Lawton to prepare for a visit to Tarleton State on Feb. 8. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1 p.m.
