LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies (16-16-1, 5-4 LSC North) softball team split a doubleheader today with Lone Star Conference North rival East Central (17-8, 3-3 LSC North) to take the 2-1 series victory at Cameron Field.
The Aggies won the game’s opener 1-0 in a defensive battle decided by
Amanda Karth’s single shot in the second inning.
The day’s blustery winds kept many balls in that park that may have otherwise left, but Karth got perfect contact and was able to push the ball just over the left field wall for the game’s only run.
Kelsy Hebert (5-6) was tabbed with the win after pitching 4.2 innings and scattering six hits. She added a pair of strikeouts and did not allow a runner past second.
Carrie Harvey, the reigning LSC Pitcher of the Week and nation’s strikeouts leader, got her second save of the season and a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief work.
“It was a tough, defensive game and I thought our pitchers did a great job,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “(Harvey) and (Hebert) did what they needed to do to get us the win.”
In game two, it was just as close as the Aggies fell 3-2 on the heels of timely hitting by the Tigers.
The teams traded runs in the first inning and
Jessica Orr plated
Cheryl Raesz in the second to give the Aggies the 2-1 lead.
In the third, the Tigers got two runs on three hits to take the lead, 3-2.
CU threatened again in the fourth but ECU pitcher Wanda Malone retired the final 10 batters of the game in order to get the Tigers their only win of the weekend.
“You have to give (Malone) a lot of credit,” said Watson. “She really shut us down for about 14 innings but we’re happy to get the series victory.”
With the series victory, the Aggies move into third place in the North Division of the LSC while East Central falls to fourth.
“We’re in a good spot,” added Watson. “We’re looking to make the conference tournament and I’ve told the team that once we get in anything can happen.”
The Aggies will return to the diamond at the LSC Crossover Tournament on April 1 in San Angelo. First up in the tournament for the Aggies is No. 11 West Texas A&M at 2:30 P.M. and Texas Woman’s at 4:30 P.M.
