Cameron Softball Splits Opening Day of Spring Fling Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENTON, Texas – Third time proved to be the charm for the Cameron Aggies softball team (9-12-1) as they took away an 8-1 decision over St. Mary’s in the opening day of the 2011 Best Western Spring Fling, hosted by Texas Woman’s University, in Denton on Friday.

It was the third time the Aggies had squared off with St. Mary’s, and they had come up short in the first two contests.

CU was not as fortunate with another repeat opponent as they fell 18-7 against Texas A&M-International. The Aggies had previously defeated the Dustdevils 3-1 this season.

Against the Dustdevils, Kelsy Hebert (2-4) was tagged with the loss after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing eight runs. Amanda Karth also stepped into the circle for the first time this season and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five funs (three earned).

A big second inning propelled TAMIU past the Aggies as they put up 11 runs to put the game out of reach.

CU added six runs in the fifth but it wasn’t enough to keep the game going and it was called after five.

In game two, CU ace Carrie Harvey (7-6) stepped into the circle and kept her game going at a high level as she pitched five innings and two hit softball while striking out eight.

The Aggies got run production early, with three in the first on a grand total of zero hits. Jessica Orr drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a Kelly Lentz ground out. Drew Wright took first after being hit by the pitch and both runners moved over one on an illegal pitch. Leslie Martini was walked and Orr scored the first run on a passed ball. Martini then stole second and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed both runners to score to make it 3-0.

Martini added three runs of her own in the fourth as she picked up her sixth home run of the season.

The Aggies return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they are scheduled to take on Nebraska-Omaha at 2 p.m. and host Texas Woman’s at 4 p.m.
