DENTON, Texas – Strong pitching performances from
Kelsy Hebert and
Carrie Harvey drove the Aggies past a pair of repeat opponents on the final day of play at the 2011 Best Western Spring Fling softball tournament, hosted by Texas Woman’s University, on Saturday.
The Aggies defeated Nebraska-Omaha 1-0 and the host team, TWU, 8-1. Both teams defeated the Aggies earlier this season but after surrendering just two runs over both games, it was CU who came out on top in the rematch.
In game one, against UNO, Cameron sent Harvey into the circle to throw a complete seven inning game while allowing just one run on two hits. She struck out 12 of the 23 batters she faced and allowed just one runner past first on a double in the final inning.
Â
The only and deciding run came in the bottom half of the second inning as
Meca Chambers tallied a two-out single to left field. She then advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by the catcher, Laure Larson.
Amanda Karth led the Ags with a pair of hits in three at-bats. As a team, CU finished with six hits and no errors.
UNO’s Beth Haley was tagged with the loss after throwing six complete innings while striking out five batters.
In game two, the offensive production came alive for CU as they pounded out ten hits for eight runs over host TWU.
Hebert was tagged with the win after tossing three complete innings. She allowed just four hits, no runs, and struck out two batters.
CU jumped out to an 8-0 lead and surrendered their only run of the game in the final inning.
Reigning LSC North Hitter of the Week
Leslie Martini got the scoring going with a two-run blast to right field, bringing in
Kelly Lentz, in the top half of the third.
In the fourth, however, CU really got it going with a four-run outburst highlighted by a
Shelby Meadows double and
Cheryl Raesz triple to begin the inning. Martini added a two RBI double as well to bring in
Jessica Orr and
Brittany Elkins.
Up 6-0, CU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with a two RBI double from Meadows to make it 8-0.
For the tournament, Head Coach Beth Watson’s squad was 3-1 and pushed their overall record to 11-12-1.
The Aggies return to the diamond on Friday, March 11 in their home opener when they play host to LSC foe Southwestern Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Aggie Field in Lawton.
