SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron Aggies (18-16-1, 5-4 LSC North) softball team got a pair of wins today at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament hosted by Angelo State, including a victory over No. 15 West Texas A&M, behind a pair of dominating pitching performances.
In the day’s first game, the Ags were on the winning end of a 2-1 decision over No. 15 West Texas A&M (26-9, 4-5 LSC South).
To close the day, CU squared off against a familiar opponent in Texas Woman’s University (21-14, 4-5 LSC South) and came away with a 3-0 victory. It was the third time the teams met this season, and Head Coach Beth Watson’s squad now holds a 2-1 advantage.
In game one, Kelsey Hebert threw 6.1 innings of flawless softball en route to her sixth win of the season. The redshirt freshman allowed one unearned run while scattering six hits and sitting down five batters.
Junior right-hander Carrie Harvey got her third save on the season as she secured the final two outs for the Aggies with a strikeout and pop out to end the game.
The game ran scoreless through the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Buffs were able to scratch a run onto the board behind a throwing error and a pair of hits.
The Aggies came back in the seventh on just one out as Drew Wright laced a single into left field to get the rally going. Leslie Martini then singled up the middle and advanced on the throw as the Lady Buffs tried to end the game covering Wright at third. Karth sent the next pitch out to center field to bring in both runners for the deciding pair of runs.
In game two, Harvey threw a complete game shutout en route to her 12th victory of the season. Harvey (12-8) struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits as she got her eighth shutout of the season in her 18th complete game performance.
The Ags got on the board in the third inning as Cheryl Raesz was able to bring home Brittany Elkins with a single up the middle.
They added another pair of runs to complete their scoring in the fifth as Meca Chambers was driven in by Jessica Orr and Kelly Lentz knocked in Cheryl Raesz.
The Aggies will return to the diamond tomorrow as they continue play in the LSC Crossover Tournament. They will take on Abilene Christian at 11 A.M. and Eastern New Mexico at 1 P.M.
