Aggie Softballers Split Second Day at LSC Crossover as Pitchers Set New Record

As a team, the Aggies have recorded 251 strikeouts, a new single-season record.

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron Aggies (19-17-1, 5-4 LSC North) finished off their second day of play at the 2011 Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament with a split as they topped Eastern New Mexico but fell to Abilene Christian in extra innings.

The Aggie pitching staff also set a new record for total strikeouts in a season. With Kelsy Hebert’s strikeout in the second inning against Abilene Christian, the team tied the previous mark of 236 strikeouts set in 2009.

In her relief appearance of the same game, Harvey struck out the final two batters to give the 2011 pitching staff the record at 238 strikeouts.

Against ACU, the Aggies got another long outing from the redshirt freshman Hebert and rallied to a 3-3 tie to push the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, with a runner automatically placed on second, the Wildcats were able to advance the runner off a Carrie Harvey wild pitch and bring her in with a sacrifice fly.

The Ags were unable to match runs in the bottom frame and fell 4-3.

Harvey was tagged with the loss after throwing the extra inning but earned the record for the team. Leslie Martini led the Aggies in the game, going 3-of-4 from the plate including an RBI single in the fourth to get the Aggies on the board.

The second game of the day was a different story, however, as the Aggie bats came to life to the tune of a 10-2 victory.

Harvey (12-9) got the victory and sat down 13 batters while allowing just two hits and two runs. She did not walk or hit a single batter and pushed the team strikeout total to 251.

Kelly Lentz led the Aggies at the plate going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

In the second, CU tacked up four runs on two hits, aided by a Zia error, to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Lentz’s one out single through the right side drove in two of the runs that inning while Jessica Orr managed to knock in a run off an infield hit.

The Black and Gold added six runs over the final three frames and kept the pedal down defensively to come away with the victory.

They will face a tough test tomorrow as they take on No. 2 Angelo State at 10 A.M. and Incarnate Word at 12:30 P.M.
