DURANT, Okla. – Newly minted LSC North First Teamer
Leslie Martini blasted her 14th homer of the season but it wasn’t enough as the Cameron Aggies (24-29-1) softball team fell to No. 3 Midwestern State (46-9), 10-2, in five innings at the 2011 Lone Star Conference Softball Championships on Friday.
The Aggies finished the tournament with a 1-2 record after falling to No. 13 Angelo State and eliminating host Southeastern on Friday.
MSU struck first in the bottom half of the first inning as Mallory Mooney homered to left field.
In the third, the Mustangs had their largest scoring outburst, a five-run effort headlined by McKenzie Sickler’s leadoff roundtripper.
Martini ripped her home run in the fourth, a two-run shot to left field, to bring the game back to a 6-2 score.
The Mustangs answered with four more runs over the final two innings to make it a 10-2 ball game and enact the run rule after five innings of play.
Junior
Carrie Harvey (17-15) was tagged with the loss on 2.2 innings of work. The LSC North Academic Player of the Year scattered six hits and allowed six runs with one strike out.
Kristina Gutierrez (20-3) earned the victory in five innings of working, allowing two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts.
With the loss, the 2011 season comes to a close for an Aggie squad that will loss just two seniors in
Cheryl Raesz and
Kelly Lentz.
On the year, the pitching staff set or tied numerous individual and team season and career records while the team posted the fewest errors in the field in school history.
The team will finish the season in fourth place in the LSC’s North Division and moves toward preparing for next season’s re-tooled lineup when every member from the division except CU and MSU move on to other conferences.
