LAWTON, Okla. (Jan. 11, 2012) ¬¬— Cameron overcame a four point halftime deficit against Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night, to pull out the 59-47 conference victory.
The Aggies (11-2, 7-1) came out focused in the second half, pushing the game to a tie close to the six-minute mark. But for the next six minutes, it was all Black and Gold, as the home team finished the game on 15-3 run to seal the home victory.
“We (the coaches) are really pleased with how we finished,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “They (Eastern N.M.) are a good team. Their record may not show it, but they hang with everyone. We let them in the game; we took some shots and gave them opportunities in transition.
A key to the game was the defensive pressure applied by Cameron in the second half. The Zias finished the first half shooting 34 percent, but was held to 25 percent in the second frame. The offense also stepped up in the second half, improving its field goal percentage from 25 percent to 39 percent. As good as the win was, Webb said he, and his team, are still focused on getting better each time they touch the court.
“We still need to get ball inside and attack the rim,” he said. “We need to get better offensively. If we can be more efficient, we have a chance to be really good. That’s what these girls want … they are hungry for it. Right now we are focused on the conference tournament, but we want to get better every day. When we get there, we want to make some noise.”
The Aggies seniors again led the Black and Gold to victory, as Nicole Pendarvis finished with eight assists; Sabelle Diata posted a game-high 19 points; while Julie Paunovic laid claim to a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The victory evened Cameron and Eastern N.M. at 4-4 in their last eight head-to-head games.
The team will continue its play-off push at 4 p.m. Saturday, as it travels to Canyon, Texas to take on West Texas (8-6, 6-2).
