Box Score CANYON, Texas (Jan. 14, 2012) ¬¬— Cameron picked up a huge road win Saturday, traveling to Canyon, Texas and defeating the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, 60-56. The victory is just the Aggies third victory in 32 meetings against West Texas and its first victory in Canyon.
“This was a really good win for this team,” said Head Coach Tom Webb.
The Aggies (12-2, 8-1) overcame a 34-27 halftime deficit to pick up the victory, after a slow start to the game. Cameron came out firing early, pulling ahead 10-6, but failed to maintain the momentum. The Lady Buffs (8-7, 6-3) played strong on their home court, going on a 10-0 during the first half to build up the lead to five, 22-17, at the six-minute mark.
“Early on, we didn’t handle the pressure well,” Webb said. “They forced us to take bad shots ... but in the second half we settled down. Our kids did a great job of executing, being strong and finishing the game. They are really good inside. So, we had to make sure we didn’t get crushed inside.
The Black and Gold came out strong in the second half, and was able to battle back into the game. Sophomore Chelsea Stamp nailed a three with 11:45 left to tie the game at 43. Once tied, Cameron seized the momentum with a total team effort, as four of the team’s five starts scored at least two points down the stretch to outscore the Lady Buffs, 17-13.
“And at the end, we executed,” Webb said. “They (the team) really, really understand that (the importance of finishing). They are tough and really competitive. Their spirit … they want to battle. It’s fun to be around, fun to coach.”
Three Aggies saw double-figures, senior Julie Paunovic, senior Sabelle Diata and junior Alexis Williams scoring 19, 13 and 12, respectively. Senior Nicole Pendarvis chipped in six assists, as well as four steals. Diata led the team in rebounds with nine.
The loss for West Texas was the team’s third consecutive loss, its longest such streak since the 2003-2004; while Cameron’s 10th victory in succession is only three games behind the longest streak in school history, achieved during the 2001-2002 season.
Cameron is in second place in the conference, behind the only team to beat the Aggies this season, Tarleton State (11-5, 8-0). Cameron will be tested again on the road Wednesday in Wichita Falls, Texas, as it takes on Midwestern State (11-3, 7-1) at 6 p.m.
