Women Lose Tough Game In Border Battle

Box Score

Wichita Falls, Texas (Jan. 18, 2012) ¬¬— Cameron’s winning streak ended tonight at 10, as the women’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker on the road to Midwestern State, 46-41. The win moves the team’s record to 12-3 and 8-2 in conference.

The Aggies and the Mustangs (12-3, 8-1) stifled each other defensively for most of the game, as each team failed to find its rhythm. Cameron took an early lead in the first half, pulling ahead 17-12 early, but struggled through the rest of the half, en route to a 28-17 halftime deficit.

“Defensively, we knew what to expect,” said Head Coach Tom Webb. “The biggest thing … we couldn’t get the ball inside as much as we wanted. We also didn’t shoot well. But, that all comes back to me. I need to get us in better sets to execute.”

Cameron came out firing in the second half, pulling to within one at 30-29, at the 12-mintue mark, but failed to gain the advantage. Down the stretch, the Black and Gold had its opportunities, as each team traded buckets, but could not get a shot to fall.

“We just gave up 27 offensive rebounds (in the game),” Webb said.”You can’t do that. That comes back to me. We’ve got to get back after that (rebounding) in the coming days. I know we'll do that. I know our kids. We will fight and be better Saturday. It’s an exciting time(because we play them again Saturday) … we’ll get back after it.”

Three of the Aggies starters scored in double digits, with seniors Nicole Pendarvis, Julie Paunovic and Sabelle Diata each scored 10 points. Paunovic and Diata also grabbed 12 and 15 rebounds, respectively, for the double-double.

The win drops the Aggies to third place in the conference, behind Tarleton State and Midwestern; the only teams to beat Cameron this season. The Black and Gold will get a quick opportunity to avenge this loss, as the team hosts the Mustangs at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Aggie Gym.

“We hope we get a good crowd Saturday,” Webb said. “We are going to come out and be our best Saturday.”
