COMMERCE, Texas (Jan. 28, 2012) ¬¬— Cameron’s women’s basketball team is back to its winning ways, knocking off Texas A&M-Commerce on the road Saturday night, 63-51.

“We’ll take it,” said Head Coach Tom Webb. “In the first half, we executed really well, but we didn’t do great rebounding.  You know, sometimes these games are hard to come out in the second half with urgency, and we didn’t, but tonight it was okay.”

Cameron came out in the first half using tough defense and a consistent offense to build an early lead. Senior Julie Paunovic opened the scoring for the Aggies (13-5, 8-4) with a lay-up. Commerce (1-17, 0-12) would respond immediately with a jump shot. Following the jump shot, the Black and Gold showed why it has the number 11 ranked defense in the nation, holding the Lions to only eight points for the rest of the half, including stretches of 10 and five minutes without a bucket, to go into the locker room with a 28-10 lead.

The Lions would go on a 12-2 run to open the second half, but the Aggies offense continued to provide an answer to help maintain its lead through the rest of the game. Paunovic would pour in 11 points in the half to help the Aggies fend off the Lions. Junior Alexis Williams provided a huge three down the stretch and ended the game with a team-high 17 points. Four other Aggies reached double-digits, as Paunovic, senior Nicole Pendarvis and senior Sabelle Diata scored 16, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Diata added 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season, tying her for 16th in the nation in that category. While his starters boasted the better statistics, it was the bench the impressed the coach the most.

“I was really pleased with our bench,” Webb said. “They played quality minutes and fought hard. It was a great team effort … well take that every night. We need to improve defensively still and keep working that way.”

The win solidifies Cameron’s first winning season since the 2005-2006 team that finished 15-13. It is also a quality conference win with the season winding down.

“Anytime win a conference game its nice,” Webb said. “It also assures us of a winning regular season, which was a goal of ours. It’s nice to achieve those little goals along the way to your final goal. The next up is to qualify for the conference tournament. To do that, we have to take it one game at a time.”

Next up for the Aggies is Angelo State (10-8, 8-4) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Angelo. The Aggies defeated the RamBelles 56-50 in the Aggie Gym in December.
