Cameron Upends Oklahoma Wesleyan In Aggie Gym

Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. (Jan. 7, 2012) ― Cameron’s women’s basketball team improved its winning streak to nine games with a 69-56 out of conference victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon in the Aggie Gym.

The victory gives Cameron 10 on the season, and improves its record to 10-2, while remaining idle in conference at 6-1.

The Aggies came out and took control of the game early, only allowing the Lady Eagles to hold the lead twice, both in the opening minutes of the game, at 2-1 and again at 4-3. Senior Julie Paunovic led the Black and Gold in the first half with nine points, including 2-4 from behind the arc. As a team, Cameron shot 6-16 from three in the first half, a number Head Coach Tom Webb said is too high when the percentage is that that low.

“We shot 16 three’s … that’s probably a few too many for us,” he said. “In the second half, we looked inside more. When you are able to do that, the three’s will open up for you and you can shoot a higher percentage.”

In the second half the inside-outside game worked, as the Lady Eagles got a steady dose of senior Sabelle Diata and junior Alexis Williams. In the half, Diata went 4-6 for nine points, while Williams lit up her midrange game, going 5-6 from the field and 1-2 from deep, for 11 points. The balance allowed the Aggies to increase its lead by 10 throughout the half.

One plus to the game was Webb’s effort to clear the bench and allow a number of his players to get minutes in a competitive game. While the move had ups and downs, one bright spot was sophomore Chelsea Stamp, who finished the game 4-7 from downtown for 12 points.

“We played a lot of young ladies and tried to get people more opportunities and increase steps,” Webb said. “The good thing is they (the players) got some play, the bad thing is it stopped some of the flow (we had going with our rotation). It was a physical game; we got some kids banged up … other than that, good to get it under our belt and now focus on conference the rest of the way.

The Aggies will continue conference play at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Eastern New Mexico (3-9, 1-5).
