KINGSVILLE, Texas – Missed free throws and turnovers came back to haunt the Cameron women’s basketball team falling in their Lone Star Conference opener to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 61-55 at Hampton Inn Court.
Cameron (1-4, 0-1 LSC) got off to a rough start in the first half committing 15 turnovers and shooting 23.1% from the field. Despite this, the Aggies pulled within one point midway through the half.
Texas A&M Kingsville (4-2, 1-0 LSC) didn’t shoot the ball well either, hitting 34% of their shots. However, they were able to put up 15 points off of Aggie turnovers.
Offensively through 20 minutes, Cameron’s leading scorer was
Alexis Williams who hit a pair of 3s and
Brittany Harris with five points. While the Javelinas had Rita Banaszcak with 11 points and Sheana Jones with nine points.
In the second half, the Aggies opened up hot with a 9-2 run and cutting down the Javelina lead down to nine points.
The Javelinas would take advantage of a few key Aggie turnovers and pull away from CU by 15 points with six minutes left to play.
Cameron once again trimmed off of the Kingsville lead getting within seven after a three-pointer by
Chelsea Stamp with 3:06 left.
Stamp tried to carry the Aggies in the remaining seconds of the game drilling a pair of 3s pulling the team within four with nine seconds left. However, the heroics were too late in the game as CU would fall 61-55
Leading the way for the Aggies was Stamp who had a career high 18 points.
Hannah Pollart gave CU 10 points and seven boards.
Ali Brown had 10 rebounds which was one short of tying a career high.
Despite the slow start the Aggies shot the ball better going 36.2% from the field compared to TAMKU’s 32.8%. The difference was the 19 points off of 27 CU turnovers that the Javelinas took advantage of over the course of the game.
Additionally, Cameron had a difficult time at the charity stripe going 11-25 (44%) and shot better at the arc hitting 10-17 (58.8%).
In the rebounding battle the Aggies edged in that category grabbing 45 boards compared to the Javelinas who had 40.
The Aggie women will return to action on Dec. 1 against Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
