Cameron Dealing In Vegas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS (Feb. 11, 2012) ―Cameron’s softball team is enjoying its time in Las Vegas, going 3-1 in the first two days of the Desert Stinger, including a 2-0 sweep today.

The Aggies (4-2, 0-0) got the ball rolling with a 9-6 victory over Colorado School of Mines, followed by a 9-7 victory over Fort Lewis College.

Cheyenne Brown took the circle for CU in game one and pitched full seven innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on 13 hits.

The Black and Gold got the action going early, posting four runs in the top of the first. Drew Wright got the party started with a single to left field. Martini reached first on a fielder’s choice, followed by a Megan B ell walk. Amanda Karth then singled to right field to drive in Martini. CU newcomer, Sonia Foutch, followed with a three run bomb over the fence in left center.

Colorado responded in the home half of the third with four runs on five hits, with the majority of the runs coming on extra base hits.

In the top of the fifth, CU exploded for five runs, on three hits and one error by the opposing team.  A Misty Dooley double knocked in two of the five runs.

Brown would allow one more run in the seventh, but the Aggies were never threatened after the fifth en route to a 9-6 victory.

“It was a total team effort,” said Head Coach Beth Watson, now in her fourth season. “The team just stepped up today. Cheyenne (Brown) showed great control and threw her game.”

Kelsey Hebert got the nod in game two and received early run support, as Cameron got things going in the third inning on a solo home run by Tiffany Freeman and a two run bomb by Leslie Martini to go up 3-0.

CU continued to pour it on in the fourth. Sonia Foutch doubled to left center to score Amanda Karth. Later in the inning, Freeman stepped up and blasted a three run homer, her second HR of the game, to make the score 7-0, Cameron.

Fort Lewis responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly. Hebert escaped trouble, allowing three hits and leaving one runner on base.

A Sonia Foutch home run in the top of the fifth stretched CU’s lead to 9-1, but FLU answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth.

The teams cooled off a bit until the bottom of the seventh inning. Fort Lewis prepared its last stand, scoring two on a homerun with no outs in the inning to make it 9-5. Three batters later, the Skyhawks struck again with another two run bomb to make the score 9-7. Hebert pitched all but the last out in the game, as Brown came in to finish the job and seal the victory.

“Tiffany Freeman hit two huge home runs in her first collegiate start,” Watson said. “That was big for us. Offensively, we just had a lot of big hits. Each of those home runs really helped us. This team has some players and each of them is ready to step up and play a role when called upon. It’s been a total team effort.”

Cameron will close of the Desert Stinger tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. with a game against New Mexico Highlands University. Cameron split on day 1, beating Regis University 8-0 and falling to Western New Mexico 7-5.

“We are ready to play,” Watson said. “This has been a great experience for us as a team. The tournament has been amazing. You dream of competing in things like this. The team will definitely grow from this experience.”
