LAS VEGAS (Feb. 12, 2012) ― Cameron took advantage of two first inning errors by New Mexico Highlands to go up early, en route to a 5-4 victory in day three of the Desert Stinger. The win improves the Aggies record in the tournament to 4-1.
Misty Dooley set the tone for the Aggies (5-2, 0-0) in the first inning with a leadoff single to right field. Sonia Foutch advanced drove in Dooley with a one-out single and advanced to second on an error by the third baseman. Leslie Martini followed with an infield single to place runners at first and second. Foutch would end up scoring on an illegal pitch, while Martini, who advanced on the illegal pitch, game in on a RBI groundout by Amanda Karth to make the score 3-0.
A Martini homerun over the centerfield fence in the top of the third inning pushed CU’s run total to four.
Aggie pitcher Cheyenne Brown continued to her consistency in the circle, picking up her fourth victory today. Brown started a little slow, allowing one run in each of the first three innings to get the game close at 4-3.
Cameron scored what wound up to be the go ahead run in the top of the sixth. Micah Foutch got a two-out rally started with a double to left field. Leah Trousdale then came in to pitch run and advanced to third on a passed ball. Claren Hurlbut then stepped up to the plate and made the most of her opportunity, singling to second base and driving in what would be the game winning run.
NMHU made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as Brown allowed her third solo homerun of the game to make it 5-4. Brown would bounce back to strike out the next batter and force a fly out to end the game.
Cameron’s success in the tournament will allow the Aggies to carry that momentum into a doubleheader against USAO in Chickasha, Okla. before traveling to Durant, Okla. to participate in the Southwestern Tournament.
