LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 4, 2012) — The Aggies used great team rebounding and its trademark tough defense to out hustle Abilene Christian to a 58-54 victory in the Aggie Gym.

The victory for Cameron (14-6, 10-5) gave the team its 10th conference victory, tying the school record set in 2001-2002. The Black and Gold outscored the Wildcats (8-12, 3-11) 10-5 in the final five minutes to steal the game.

“It was crazy down the stretch,” said Head Coach Tom Webb. “We made some plays late that were really good. This league is just tough. Every single game, you just have to play up (to the level of competition). We won, we’ll take it.”

Cameron came out firing in the first half, pulling ahead 15-7 with 12:45 left in the first half. The Aggies largest lead of the half was 10, coming at the 4:07 mark. Sabelle Diata led the team in scoring in the half, going 6-8 from the field, while adding six rebounds.

The action played tighter in the second half, with the Wildcats taking the lead for more than half of the half. But Cameron took advantage of its opportunities, and Ali Brown atoned for a technical foul she received early in the second half, as she posted four points and seven rebounds after the foul. In total, Cameron out rebounded their opponents 48-33 in the game.

“We rebounded really well,” Webb said. “We didn’t shoot well … we looked tired. We have a day off tomorrow, though, so that will be good. The key was, we rebounded and defended and made shots when we needed to.”

”They have a really good post kid, andwe held her to five. Their guard went off on us a little bit. We’re athletic, we are really long and we’ve bought into the defensive philosophy as a team. When that happens, you can be good. It’s all the team, their time their work, their deal.”

The Aggies can clinch a post season berth with an 11th conference victory Thursday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Webb said he refuses to look forward to something a week away.

“We just tied record for most conference victories in school history,” he said. “But, we’re really trying not to worry about anything except for today. That’s been good for us. We have three keys still need to improve on: execution, more bench play and growth … and staying fresh and excited. We need to do that to be better.”
