KINGSVILLE, Texas (March 30, 2012) — After one day of battle Cameron and Texas A&M-Kingsville are even, as each team picked up a victory in Friday’s doubleheader. The Javelinas took game one 7-6, but Cameron used a big inning to propel itself to a 7-4 win in game two.
“I like how our team continues to fight, no matter the situation,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “We didn’t win game one, but we fought to the end. It was nice to get the victory in game two, and we needed that after some tough losses earlier this week and today.”
Cameron (14-21, 5-9) scored first in game one as Misty Dooley came around to score on a Tara Martini single to centerfield. Kingsville (14-20, 3-11) answered with a run of its own of CU starter Cheyenne Brown (7-10). The Aggies took the lead again in the second inning as Amanda Karth came in to score on an illegal pitch, but it was short lived. The Javelinas took advantage of two errors, while picking up three hits, in the bottom of the second to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead.
The score remained 4-2 until the fourth inning when Cameron again made an effort to get back in the game. Dooley, a constant spark in the offense, led off the inning with a walk. After advancing to second on a groundout by Micah Foutch, Dooley would come around to score on a big double to centerfield fence by Drew Wright.
But as was the theme of the game, Kingsville responded to CU’s offensive attack by scoring two runs of their own to take a 6-3 lead into the sixth.
In typical Black and Gold fashion, Cameron began its comeback late in the game. The Aggies got a two-out rally started in the final frame on a double to right field by Martini. Sonia Foutch followed with a single, scoring Martini to cut the lead to 6-4. Karth followed with a big hit to put the tying run on base for CU, and it paid off as Tiffany Freeman blasted a double deep to left field, allowing Foutch and Karth to score to knot the game at 6.
Dooley led off the extra frame with a single, but Cameron was unable to plate a run, leaving an opportunity to the Javelinas. The first batter of the inning blasted a bomb to left field, sealing the 7-6 victory for the home team.
Kelsy Hebert took the circle in game two and put forth a great effort, picking up her fourth victory of the season. Hebert allowed 14 but was able to make big pitches in big situations to limit the damage to four runs.
“Kelsy (Hebert) is improving every time she gets in the circle,” Watson said. “And Sonia called a great game behind the plate. They worked really well together.”
Cameron got the party started in the third inning, scoring all seven of its runs with two outs during that frame. Leah Trousdale was the first Aggie to reach base in the inning on a single to left field. Micah Foutch got hit by a pitch to put two Aggies on the base paths. Drew Wright stepped up and blasted an RBI single to left field, scoring Trousdale and moving Foutch to second. Martini was next to the plate and delivered with a hard single up the middle to load the bases. An Amanda Karth RBI walk brought in the second run of the inning and kept the rally alive. Sonia Foutch, like her sister, got hit by a pitch and was given the free base and RBI as the carousel continued.
Tiffany Freeman provided the big bomb in the inning, as she doubled to clear the bases and pick up three big RBI. Megan Bell picked up the final RBI, scoring Freeman, but was thrown out after the run scored advancing to second base.
The Javelinas struggled to overcome the seven run deficit, scoring only four runs over the next five innings to fall 7-4.
The teams will conclude the series with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m. The winner will claim the overall series win and move into a more comfortable spot in conference standings. Cameron is currently sitting in 7th place overall in the conference, with the top 8 teams advancing to the postseason.
