LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 14, 2012) — Cameron and West Texas A&M took advantage of a strong south wind Saturday, combining for 52 runs and 11 homeruns in an afternoon doubleheader. The Lady Buffs took game one 20-17 and followed with a 14-1 victory in game two.

“The wind was a mess out there,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “If you didn’t keep the ball down, it was hit out. Even some that were down were still hit far. It’s one of those things. We were able to hit their pitching in game one, but in game two we just couldn’t get it together.”

Kelsy Hebert took the circle in game one and allowed 15 hits and 16 runs over 4.1 innings. The loss drops her record to 4-8 on the season. Cheyenne Brown relieved Hebert and allowed four runs over the final 2.2 innings.

Despite playing close, Cameron (15-29, 6-17) never led in game one. The closest the Aggies managed to pull was in the fifth inning, trailing 17-15.

The Black and Gold picked up 17 hits in the game, highlighted by big homeruns from Tara Martini and Tiffany Freeman. Martini connected for a three-run bomb in the first inning, while Freeman picked up a big grand slam in a seven-run third inning.

Amanda Karth also made some noise, going 3 for 4 with two singles, a double and four RBI. Sonia Foutch, Leah Trousdale and Amy Garcia picked up the rest of the RBIs, with Foutch and Trousdale picking up two apiece, and Garcia picking up one.

The Aggies fought until the end in the game, as the game ended with the tying run on deck.

“Our three through seven holes really connected well,” Watson said, citing their 13-21 performance in the game. The hitters accounted for 13 runs and 12 RBI. “It was good to see, but I wish it would have carried over to the next game.”

The Buffs (30-15, 14-9) took control early in game two, hitting three homeruns in the first inning to take an early 5-0 lead off CU starter Cheyenne Brown.  Brown lasted only .1 innings before being pulled for Hebert.

But WT found success off Hebert as well, as she finished with 4.2 innings, six hits and nine runs allowed.

Tara Martini picked up the Aggies only hit in the game, as the Black and Gold fell 14-1.

“We needed to win one of these games this weekend,” Watson said. “There’s not many games left, so they are mean more and more.”

The Aggies remain in the 8th and final play-off spot, in front of Texas A&M-Kingsville (17-28, 5-18) and Eastern New Mexico (13-32, 5-18). CU will return to action Tuesday, hosting a game against Midwestern State at 3 p.m.
