LAWTON, Okla. (April 17, 2012) — On the same day President Cindy Ross, Athletic Director Jim Jackson and members of the McMahon Foundation broke ground on the new McMahon Softball Field and Athletics Center, the Aggies dug in against Midwestern and ended their home season in style with a 2-1 victory.
“It’s nice to go out with a win,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “We played well today and Carrie (Dilks) pitched a great game for us. Amanda (Karth) picked up a big hit when we needed it, so did Tara (Martini) in the first inning. It took a team effort, and we got one.”
Playing in her final home game, senior Carrie Dilks delivered a masterful performance, allowing four hits, four walks and no runs over six strong innings. The Burkburnett-native relieved Kelsy Hebert in the second inning and never looks back, shutting down MSU for the remainder of the game.
The Aggies (16-29, 7-17) scored first, capitalizing on a Misty Dooley single and an error by MSU’s shortstop to get runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt by Drew Wright, Tara Martini grounded out to first base, scoring Dooley in the process.
Midwestern (23-21, 13-11) responded in the second with a solo homerun off Hebert to tie at the game at one. Dilks got the call after the homerun, and after allowing two singles and a walk, she struck out two to end the inning.
The game quickly became a pitcher’s duel, with both teams struggling to reach base. But in the 6th inning, CU found pay dirt.
Wright picked up a one-out single, followed by a single by Sonia Foutch to put two women on the bags. Amanda Karth stepped up next and ripped the first pitch she saw down the left field line, scoring Wright to take a 2-1 lead. Sonia was thrown out at third shortly after Wright scored.
The Mustangs had an opportunity in the 7th, putting two runners on, but she settled down and finished like she has throughout her career as an Aggie.
“It was vintage Carrie,” Watson said. “She was painting the corners and changing speeds really well. Anytime she needed to make a pitch, she was able to. That’s what makes her dangerous.”
