Box Score 2 PORTALES, N.M. (April 20, 2012) — Cameron’s Softball Team got off to bad start on its weekend road trip, dropping a pair of games to Eastern New Mexico, 12-4 and 2-1. The losses drop the Aggies overall record to 16-31, while moving its conference record to 7-19.
“We have to play better tomorrow,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “We just came out flat. There’s no excuse for it. We have to get to business tomorrow.”
Following a strong performance against Midwestern State last Tuesday, Carrie Dilks took the circle for the Aggies in game one. But her success was not the same Friday, as Dilks was touched up for 12 hits and 12 runs (8 earned) over 5.2 innings.
The Zias (15-33, 7-19) started the scoring early, plating four runs in the first inning on a two-out grand slam. ENMU scored another run in the 4th inning to make the game 5-0. The Black and Gold started finding success late in the game, scoring two runs in each of the 5th and 6th innings, but failed to mount enough offense to get back into the game.
Drew Wright picked up two RBI in the top of the 5th on a two-out double to left center. Micah Foutch and Tiffany Freeman each picked up RBI singles in the sixth inning.
Eastern’s seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning brought the eight-after-six run rule into effect.
Kelsy Hebert pitched game two and looked strong, holding the Zias to only four hits and one run in four innings. Cheyenne Brown spelled Hebert and went 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run.
Despite the Aggies ability to slow down the home team’s bats, CU struggled to score runs of its own. Cameron did have opportunities, stranding seven baserunners in the game. The Black and Gold’s lone run came in the 3rd inning on a Sonia Foutch single down the leftfield line, scoring Claren Hurlbut.
The teams took a 1-1 game into the bottom of the 7th, but ENMU was able to play small ball and capitalize on a pair of walks to take the 2-1 victory.
The losses set up a win and you’re in situation for both CU and ENMU. Saturday’s game is the final conference game, with both teams tied at 7-19 for the eighth and final spot.
