LAWTON, Okla. (April 6, 2012) — Cameron fell victim to the long ball Friday, losing to the Abilene Christian Wildcats 5-1, with the majority of the runs coming on the three-run home run during a tie game in the sixth inning. The win gives ACU the edge in the series, 2-1.
“We really wanted to win this game and the series,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “We played hard throughout. It’s tough. They just came up with a big hit late in the game.”
Cameron (15-25, 6-12) got on the board first, as Tara Martini knocked in her second run of the series on a single, scoring Misty Dooley to make the game 1-0.
Carrie Dilks took the circle for the Aggies and put forth a strong effort on a breezy day. She held a strong ACU offense off the board until the fourth inning, as the Wildcats scored their first run of the game to knot it at two.
The teams traded goose eggs in the fifth, but in the sixth Abilene Christian struck fast. ACU’s Brianna Fowlkes slammed a ball over the left field fence to put her team up 4-1.
ACU would score an insurance run in the seventh, en route to a 5-1 victory, as the Aggies stranded two runners on base in the final two innings.
“We couldn’t string together any hits,” Watson said. “It’s hard to score with one hit at a time.”
The Aggies will return to action Tuesday, traveling to Wichita Falls to take on Midwestern State University in an afternoon doubleheader.
