Box Score ALVA, Okla. – Cameron buckled down to survive a night of 21 turnovers and an inconsistent second half to edge out Northwestern Oklahoma, 62-57 in Alva on Saturday night.
With wins in their first two games this is the first time since the 2003-04 season that CU opened with a perfect start.
"We didn't shoot the ball all that well tonight but we persevered," said head coach
Tom Webb. "Our seniors really stepped it up late, Lacy (Reinke) came up with a clutch bucket and Ali (Brown) sank a big three for us."
"We have a new group this season and we've been tested twice on the road but we're looking forward to playing a couple games at home. The nice thing we are playing as a team and we know we have the depth to score and spread the ball around this season."
Cameron opened up a 9-0 lead over Northwestern Oklahoma (0-4) and didn't have any answers on how to slow down
Jazzmine Robinson who dropped down 17 points in the first half. Cameron would shoot a strong 42.9% from the field to take a 33-22 lead into the locker room.
The second half almost proved to be too much for Cameron to handle and their 11 point halftime lead turned into a Ranger advantage by the 12:30 mark. After trading points for the next 10 minutes the Aggies got five big points from
Ali Brown to give them a four point lead and the win late.
Christina Caddy continued to be stellar on the defensive end pulling down 14 rebounds and added 10 points for a double-double; she also added a pair of blocks and steals.
After a 17 point first half, Robinson was neutralized after halftime with no points; she was a rebound short of a double-double though.
DJ Vallier added 11 points, while
Lacy Reinke chipped in eight points and seven boards.
As a group, Cameron shot 37.5% from the field and out-rebounded the Rangers 48-35.
Northwestern Oklahoma took a 22 point advantage in points off of turnovers and second chance points in the second half; they shot the ball at 37.3% from the field.
The Aggies will have a pair of days off before their home opener on Tuesday against Barclay College at 6 p.m.
