Aggies comeback falls short in Portales

Box Score

Portales, N.M. – A late second half comeback fell short as Cameron lost their sixth game in a row at Eastern New Mexico, 53-48 on Wednesday night at the Greyhound Arena.

Chelsea Stamp nailed down four late three-pointers for Cameron (4-16, 3-11 LSC) and led her team with 15 points. Lacy Reinke added 10 points for Cameron, while Hannah Pollart chipped in 10 rebounds and seven points.

Eastern New Mexico (5-17; 4-10 LSC), scored the majority of their points through Nelsha Peterson who finished with 16 points, Tara Johnson was a point short of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.

In the first half neither team shot the ball all that well with ENMU hitting 28.6 percent of their shots, while CU was 22.7 percent from the field. From the arc, Cameron went 1-10; which were actually the first points of the game by either team.

The Aggies would score four points in the final seven minutes of the first half but they would head to the locker room trailing by single digits, 20-11.

The second half started much like the majority of the first half for Cameron as it looked like Eastern New Mexico had the Aggies hand leading by 11 (41-30) with 8:07 remaining.

Suddenly, in the next four minutes the Aggies flipped on a switch and on a 13-4 run after Stamp nailed down three treys to pull within two points, 45-43 with less than four minutes left.

ENMU would pull their lead to five points with 1:41 left before Stamp nailed her fifth three-pointer of the night to pull CU within two with 41 seconds left. The Aggies were then forced into fouling situations and put the Zias at the line to extend the game, but ENMU hit the necessary shots and CU could not respond back with points, falling 53-48.

Cameron's shooting improved throughout the night and finished with a better field goal percentage (37 percent) than Eastern New Mexico (34 percent). Additionally, the Aggies limited their turnovers and committed five in the second half, compared to 10 in the first. In rebounding, Cameron trailed Eastern New Mexico, 41-to-32. Offensive boards proved to be a key difference with the Zias picking up 14 boards compared to five from the Aggies.

The Aggies will travel back to Lawton to face West Texas A&M at the Aggie Gym on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. for their annual Pink Out Game.
