LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University women's basketball team lost to the West Texas Lady Buffs in a close one, 55-53.
Cameron, who is now 4-17 with a 3-12 Lone Star Conference record, got 15 points from Chelsea Stamp tonight. Stamp was 6-10 from the field and 2-3 from the three point line. The Aggies also got contributions from Ellie Carter, who had nine points, and Jordan Kauk, Sasha Carter, and Hannah Pollart, who all had six points each. E. Carter also accounted for three assists and two steals.
The Aggies were 46.7% from the field, 37.5% from the arc, and 45.5% from the free throw line. They got 16 points in the paint and 26 points from their bench. Cu lost the rebounding battle 27-29 and gave up the ball 16 times, compared to the Lady Buffs 13 turnovers.
In the first half, Cameron trailed for all of the 20 minutes, with the WT lead getting up to nine points at multiple times in the half. They would then make a run at the lead with 4:19 left in the half, fueled by a 7-0 run that was capped off by an old-fashioned three point play by Sharna Hoosier.
The score at the half was 33-30, WT.
Cameron was able to tie it at 39 at the 14:46, but let West Texas get back to an eight point lead a couple minutes later. The Aggies would continue to chip away at the score until they had it tied at 51 with 3:37 left.
CU would find themselves down four with 11 seconds left, but a layup by Brittany Harris got them to within two with seven seconds left. A WT turnover would give the Aggies the ball back. They were then fouled, went to the line, and missed the free throw. Another arid pass by the Lady Buffs would give CU one more chance, in which Stamp heaved a three from five feet from behind the arc, which would miss the target. The game ended 55-53.
WT got 19 points from Devin Griffin and 12 points form Raven Gerald. The Lady Buffs (13-11, 9-6 LSC) shot 36.2% from the field, 30.8% from behind the arc, and 73.9% from the free throw line.
Next up for the Aggies will be a trip to San Angelo Feb. 13 for a 6 pm game against Angelo State.
