First inning runs doom Cameron in 10-2 loss to ACU

Box Score

ABILENE, Texas -- The Cameron University softball team fell to Abilene Christian in the opening game of the three game weekend series, 10-2.

After the loss, CU’s record is now 13-23 overall and 6-10 in conference play. The loss snapped a four game win streak for the Aggies.  ACU now sits at 22-20 on the season and 6-10 tied with Cameron in the conference standings for eighth place.

The Aggies were able to get eight hits off of Abilene Christian, with Spencer Ferrell going 2-3 and getting a RBI. CU’s starter Kelsy Hebert (4-5) struggled against the Wildcat hitters giving up six runs, two earned, in the first inning.

ACU was led offensively by Madison Buckley and Lyndi Smith who both hit two-run homers. Caitlyn Crain (9-10) went all five innings, struck out three, and gave up no walks.

Cameron got off to a quick start in the first after Ferrell ripped a single down the left field line.

After that, Misty Dooley got on base on a fielder’s choice, while Ferrell was tagged out a second. Two batters later, Leslie Martini hit a double to left center, and Dooley was able to score to give the Aggies an early 1-0 lead.

From there, it was pretty much all Wildcats. After getting walked, leadoff hitter Keanna Winkfield advanced to second off a sac bunt by Sara Vaughn. Then Buckley stepped up to the plate and hit a home-run to put ACU up, 2-1. They would tack up four more runs in the inning before Samantha Betts came in to relieve Hebert.

In the second inning, Abilene continued where they left off by scoring four runs that inning.

Cameron was able to put another run on the board in the fourth after Ferrell doubled to left center to knock in Makenzie Burk and send Carly Allerheiligen to third.

The two teams will be back in action on Saturday at Abilene for a doubleheader, with the first game starting at noon.
