ABILENE, Texas – Two streaks ended for the Cameron University men’s tennis team at the Eager Tennis Pavilion in Abilene on Thursday afternoon. Nicolai Ferrigno’s perfect season in singles came to an end but Cameron earned their first team win against the Wildcats since March 31, 2009.Â
The Aggies dropped their last seven matches in a row to the Wildcats. Last season, ACU had the upper hand edging CU at home 5-4 and in the Lone Star Conference Championship match 5-2.Â
For Cameron, their overall record moves to 16-2 and 2-0 in the LSC with a national ranking of 19. The Wildcats slip to .500 (12-12) and a 1-2 conference record, they are ranked #16 in the nation.Â
In doubles, Cameron took an early 2-1 lead getting wins in the two and three slot. The pairing of Ferrigno and Dean Weigelt generated a tight 9-8 in two doubles; while in the three slot Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazendeiro earned a 8-6 win.
The middle of the Aggies singles order proved to be the key to Cameron’s success getting wins in two, three, and four singles. However, two of these matches proved to be thrillers that could have went in either direction.Â
Duje Janjic in the two slot battled after dropping the first set 5-7 to Nicklas Wingord; Janjic would storm back to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3 for his 14th singles win of the season. Jorge Gerosi in the four slot won set one 6-2 over Jason Proctor but Gerosi would get swept 0-6 in the second set. Despite this setback, Gerosi battled to a 6-1 win in set three for the game.Â
Merdan was the other Aggie to earn a singles win. He would take down Guilherme Gesser, 6-3, 6-4. Gesser was ranked #12 within the South Central Region.Â
Ferrigno’s season win streak ended at 17, as he would fall to Hans Hach in three sets 4-6, 7-5, and 6-2. Hach and Ferrigno played against each other in the fall at the ITA Regional Final with Hach winning 4-6, 6-2, and 6-2. Both are ranked as the top two players in the South Central Region and inside the top 20 nationally.Â
Cameron will have the next few days off before traveling to Seminole State College on April 9 for a match at 1 p.m.
