Aggies can't hold on late to #6 Texas Woman's

Box Score

CANYON, Texas – The Cameron University softball team was five outs away from upsetting top seeded Texas Woman's, but a two run homer in the sixth inning by the Pioneers was the dagger for the Ags in a 2-1 loss at the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Canyon.

Leading the way offensively for Cameron was Carly Allerheiligen, reaching base all three times she batted. She also scored the lone run for CU. Misty Dooley and Spencer Ferrell also gave the team a hit each.

Samantha Betts got the start for Ags. Betts got plenty of support from her defense early, retiring the first eight batters she faced. In six innings of work, she gave up six hits, two runs, and struck out one.

Spencer Ferrell got things going for the Aggies in the first with an infield hit. Allerheiligen then got on base and moved Ferrell ahead with a bunt. Tara Martini was able to get to first after a fielder's choice that got out Ferrell. Allerheiligen would later score from third off of a heads up play after the Pioneers tried to gun down Tara Martini stealing second.

The Ags threatened again to increase their lead in the top of the third. Misty Dooley led off with an infield single. She then advanced to second after Ferrell laid down a sac bunt. Allerheiligen then singled to left field and Dooley went to third. Tara Martini then put the ball in play, but Dooley was gunned down trying to score. However, Cameron would get its third out when Martini got called out for leaving first early.

After a hitless top of the fourth, the Aggies had to rely on their defense when the Pioneers were on the brink of scoring. Amanda Ruiz led off with a single up the middle and moved to second with a stolen base. Betts then walked LSC Hitter of the Year Katie Hines. The CU defense stayed strong and got the next two TWU batters out to keep the lead.

In the bottom of the sixth the Aggies caught a break after gunning down a TWU runner stealing to record the first out. However, the Pioneers would draw a walk before Katie Hines hit a homer that just cleared the center field fence to give them the 2-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Texas Woman's was able retired Sonia Foutch and Sonora Zukerman. Pinch hitter Jill Ledford got walked to put the potential tying run on first, but Cameron was unable to tie it up.

CU ends the season with a 17-31 overall record.
