Christina Caddy led the Cameron University women's basketball team with 14 points but the Aggies would fall late to Texas A&M Kingsville 60-48 on Wednesday night.
After holding onto a six point lead in the later stages of the second half the Cameron women (9-7, 1-5 LSC) were silenced for seven minutes while Texas A&M Kingsville (7-9, 2-4 LSC) dashed out in front to the finish line.
Caddy was a rebound short of the double-double with nine boards,
Brittany Harris came up with nine, and
Jade Herl chipped in eight points to lead CU.
Turnovers plagued Cameron with 29 throughout the night which resulted in 30 points for Texas A&M Kingsville. The Javelinas also commanded offensive boards with 21 compared to Cameron's 11.
"It's disappointing, you can't give that many offensive boards and turn the ball over nearly 30 times and expect to win especially on the road," said head coach
Tom Webb.
Cameron rallied from an early five point hole and took a commanding 10 point, 23-13 lead with eight minutes to go in first half. After trading buckets for next five minutes, the Javelinas controlled the final three by silencing the Aggie offense and closing the half with eight unanswered points to trail, 29-28.
Keeping the Javelinas quiet in the second half proved to be a challenge for the Aggies. Cameron maintained the lead for a sizeable portion of half but like the first 20 minutes of the game the Aggies started to fade. Caddy gave the Aggies a six point lead after getting a bucket with seven minutes remaining; however those points would be the last for Cameron as Texas A&M Kingsville closed the game with 18 unanswered points to win 60-48.
Cameron shot the ball better going 38.8% from the field while Kingsville shot 33.8%; however the Javelinas out-rebounded the Aggies 44-39.
Cameron will return home on Saturday to host Angelo State at 2 pm.
