Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron sank 12 three-pointers, but they couldn't stop Angelo State's shooting, falling 71-61 on Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Gym.
The 12 three-pointers by the Ags (9-8, 1-6 LSC) was their highest total since Nov. 30, 2009 where the Aggies hit a program high 16 treys. Half of Cameron's three pointers came from
Chelsea Stamp, who came one three point shot short of a program best.
"They stayed in a 2-3 zone, so we got a lot of threes," said head coach
Tom Webb, "We shot well enough to win; we just didn't get to the free throw line."
Cameron's 16 turnovers gave Angelo State (10-8, 4-4 LSC) second life with 16 points and they had four players in double-figures.
Stamp led the Ags with 18 points with
Brittany Harris adding 14 and five assists;
Lacy Reinke gave CU a team high eight rebounds.
After making the first bucket of the game Cameron fell behind Angelo State for the rest of the half. The Rambelles' largest lead of 14 points took place at the six minute mark before the Ags got a Harris jumper and a Stamp three pointer to make it a 30-21 ballgame. Both teams traded buckets but Stamp's 12 points kept the Aggies within 10 at the half to trail ASU, 37-27.
The Aggies had a hard time breaking through the Angelo State 10 point lead in the second half. Cameron broke through with four minutes to go following a jumper by
Jazzmine Robinson and Stamp's sixth three pointer of the afternoon to get CU within five, 64-59. Despite Cameron's run, Angelo State would shut down the Aggie offense with seven unanswered points to win 71-61.
"At the end of the day, we have very talented kids who compete, and we just have to worry about us right now. If we do that, I think we'll be okay," said Webb
Angelo topped the Aggies in shooting (49.1%) and rebounding (33), CU hit 41.8% of their shots with 29 rebounds.
Cameron will have a week off before traveling on Saturday to Midwestern State with a 6:30 pm tipoff; their contest with Mustangs will follow the men's game due to the CS-Houston television broadcast.
